A Message from the Principal A Message from the Principal

This week provided so many reminders of what makes Mount Pleasant a special community. Our Back to School Night gave families an opportunity to walk their students’ schedules, meet our teachers, and experience firsthand the learning environments our staff work hard to create each day. Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to partner with us in supporting our students.

That Green Knight pride was also on full display Friday night. Before kickoff, our Green Knight Marching Band delivered a spectacular performance. They sounded incredible, and watching their Nightmare Before Christmas show had me smiling with pride. The talent, preparation, and energy of our student musicians added something special to the evening and reminded me that there are so many different ways our students make Mount proud.

Our football game offered another important reminder. While the final result may not have been in our favor, progress is not always linear. Growth takes work, perseverance, and the willingness to keep pushing even when the outcome seems decided. I watched our football team continue to compete and fight to score late in the game. That spirit—the refusal to give up—is the same spirit we need as we continue building the Mount Pleasant we know we can be. I am more determined than ever to cultivate a school that our students, staff, families, alumni, and community are proud to call theirs.

Finally, beginning-of-the-year paperwork—including medical cards, Code of Conduct acknowledgments, and Chromebook Loan Agreements—has been sent home. Please ensure these materials are reviewed, signed, and returned to students’ first-period teachers by Friday, September 11. Failure to complete required paperwork may prevent students from participating in certain school privileges and activities, including Homecoming.

There is much to celebrate, much to build upon, and plenty of work still ahead. We will keep moving forward—together.

One School. One Community. We ARE!

Introducing the MPHS Futures Center: Your Future Starts Here!

This year, Mount Pleasant is proud to launch our new Futures Center, an initiative developed directly in response to feedback from students and families during my student focus groups this summer. One message came through clearly: students want more support navigating what comes after high school. The Futures Center is designed to help close that gap by providing every Green Knight with greater access to information, resources, and individualized support as they explore college, careers, trades, military service, and other post-secondary pathways.

The Futures Center is staffed by Ms. Jenn Hann-Deschaine, BSD High School Career Center Advisor, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with open office hours during all four lunches. Students should sign up to attend open office hours in SCOIR. Students may also schedule individual appointments for more personalized support. Ms. Hann-Deschaine can be reached at jennifer.hann-deschaine@bsd.k12.de.us.

Whether a student knows exactly where they are headed or is just beginning to explore the possibilities, we want them to know they do not have to navigate that process alone. Whatever your path, we’re here to help!

Class of 2027 Planning Your Future Night

Senior year is here, and now is the time to start planning for what comes next! Class of 2027 students and their families are invited to join us for Planning Your Future on Thursday, September 10, at 6:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant High School. This session will focus on the important steps seniors and their families should be taking now to prepare for life after graduation, whether that path includes college, career, trade, military service, or another opportunity. We strongly encourage our senior families to attend and take advantage of the resources and support available as we help every Green Knight prepare for their next chapter.

Planning Your Future sessions are also coming for our other grade levels! Class of 2028 students and families will have their session on September 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Brandywine High School, followed by a session for the Classes of 2029 & 2030 on September 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant High School. These grade-level sessions will help families understand what students should be doing now to prepare for their future.

Student Chromebooks & Device Loan Agreement

Mount Pleasant is a 1:1 technology school, and all students are expected to use a district-issued Chromebook for their instructional technology needs. All freshmen will receive a new Chromebook this year; however, a device cannot be issued until the BSD Student Device Loan Agreement has been reviewed and signed by the student and parent/guardian. Please complete the agreement as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving a device.

Students should bring their fully charged district Chromebook to school each day and to all classes. Please note that only district-issued technology is supported in the building. Upperclassmen who believe they need a new or replacement device should see Mr. Bernard, who will assess the student's technology needs and work directly with the student and family to determine the appropriate next steps.

Student Schedules: What You Need to Know!

Our Counseling Team has created a Student Schedule Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) resource to help answer many common questions, including when schedules will be available, the criteria for requesting a change, processing timelines, and the September 30 deadline for schedule change requests.

We encourage students and families to review the FAQ before contacting their school counselor with scheduling questions.

IB Students: Preparing for the Year Ahead

As we begin the school year, IB students should be prepared to submit any summer assignments to the teachers who assigned them. Juniors and seniors should also carefully review their schedules to ensure they are accurate as we prepare for IB examination registration in October.

Please remember that students enrolled in an IB course are required to sit for the corresponding IB examination in May and complete all required assessments throughout the school year. Last year, the examination fee was $124 per exam; information regarding this year’s testing fees will be shared once it becomes available. Exam fees are waived for students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

AVID is off to a great start this year! Throughout the year, we will be sharing examples of AVID in Action at MPHS, highlighting both our AVID elective classes and initiatives happening throughout the building.

This week, we are spotlighting AVID 10, where new members were welcomed with a collaborative camping challenge. Students worked together to decide which supplies to bring, practicing active listening and critical thinking along the way.

Collaboration is one of the key learning strategies within WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). WICOR strategies are used schoolwide at MPHS to provide rigorous learning opportunities for all students.

We encourage you to ask your student how they practiced collaboration in their classes this week!

Celebrating Our Green Knights: First & Final First Days

There is something special about the beginning of a new school year—especially for our freshmen and seniors. For the Class of 2030, this marks the beginning of their Green Knight journey, while the Class of 2027 is celebrating the start of their final year at Mount Pleasant.

We are excited to share our freshman and senior class photos and celebrate these two important milestones. One class is just beginning to write its Mount story, while another prepares to make the most of its final chapter. We cannot wait to see where this year takes them!
