SUMMER SUPPORT

Typically, I have not sent out a newsletter during the summer, however, in light of the uncertainty around what school will look like in the fall and the need for resources and support going forward, I wanted to make sure that I continue to share.

I also want to take this time to say that, like many of you out there I am sure, I have found myself in a very reflective place in the last few weeks. Our world, I strongly believe, is at a historical crossroads in so many ways and I am always astounded at how perfectly our content area is poised to address those hard to have conversations. I am and have always been a life-long learner in all manner of speaking and pledge to continue to always seek to learn. I am also a firm believer that our world is more beautiful because of the diversity in peoples and creeds and that ALL people should be treated with dignity, respect and kindness. Hate, racism, prejudice, bigotry and disrespect have no place in this world. We MUST be willing to LEARN from and about each other, DEAL with our collective past (however difficult that is to swallow) and have the HARD conversations with each other. Our job as Social Studies teachers is more important now than ever and I am thankful that each of you do the hard work with our young people each day.

Please do not hesitate to ever reach out with questions, concerns, ideas or training needs.

Reflecting on Juneteenth

Reflecting on Juneteenth

Described as a second independence day, June 19th or Juneteenth marks the day that emancipation reached slaves in the furthest reaches of the South. While the Emancipation Proclamation formally freed all slaves in the United States, plantation life continued as though no change had occurred in many parts of the slaveholding South until this day. Juneteenth is a time to reflect upon this history, including the steps toward freedom that have been achieved and the forces that continue to undermine the freedom of African Americans.
