A Message from Mr. Dolce A Message from Mr. Dolce

Hello South Davis Families.

I wish you a restful and refreshing spring break beginning on Friday, April 3. We are grateful to everyone for helping to restore a consistent school routine. We also appreciate everyone's efforts to avoid taking additional time before or after the scheduled break as every day is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as to connect with their peers and teachers. When students miss too much school, regardless of the reason, it can cause them to fall behind academically and socially. Being late to school or leaving early can also lead to poor attendance patterns.

We look forward to seeing you again when school resumes on Monday, April 13. Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest, struggling with school work, is dealing with a difficult situation or needs a connection. If your family or child needs support, please reach out to your child's teacher, me, or connect with the Family Solutions Center. Thank you for partnering with us.

Have a great rest of the week, and a great Spring Break!

Mr. Dolce

Health and Wellness - AED Scavenger Hunt

Students have received an AED Scavenger Hunt (attached below) sheet during class this week and there is also a digital version available if you would like to use it at home. The University at Buffalo, UB Orthopedics, and the Buffalo Bills have asked Orchard Park Schools to be a part of an AED Mapping Project. This is a pilot project that they hope to take nationwide. Our students are being asked to notice and record the locations of AEDs that they find in our community and beyond to assist in the growth of the NEAR Registry. This registry is available for 911 dispatchers so that they can let callers know where the nearest AED is in a cardiac emergency, prior to the arrival of EMTs. The scavenger hunt will run from Wednesday, March 18, to Tuesday, April 14. Students are asked to hand in their logs to their homeroom teacher.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Updates and Reminders Updates and Reminders

End of Day Pick-Up Reminders

There still seems to be confusion as to the process for students not taking the school bus at the end of the day. Please read this carefully.

  • Pre-K parents walk their children to and from the school. As a result, they need to park on South Davis Street. At the end of the day, if they are also picking up an older child, they may have to wait a bit longer.
  • If you are meeting your child on the sidewalk in front of the school, please mark your child a walker in the Parent Portal.
    • If you walked or biked to the building, that's great!
    • If you drove - and you are not a Pre-K parent - please be sure to park on the west side of South Davis Street (opposite side from the school), and use the crosswalk to and from the pick up area.
  • The curbside pick-up area should not be used for walkers. If you are getting out of your vehicle and you are not a Pre-K parent, please park on the other side of the street, or pull past the middle driveway to keep the pick-up zone clear.

As always, these are in place for the safety of all involved, and to ensure an efficient drop-off and dismissal process.

The Spare Change for Stories is almost over!

This year we are pleased to have Troy Cummings as our guest author this June. He has written over 20 different children's books including the series Notebook of Doom.

This year, PTO wants to help provide a lasting memory for the students of South Davis. If we reach our goal of $1,400, every child at South Davis will receive a book by the author that will include a signature!

Pass along the information and ask your kiddos what monster they will feed! As an added incentive, as we make our goal, whichever monster has collected the most spare change, Mr. Dolce will dye his hair that color!

Participation is optional.

Spring Clean Out!

We are gearing up for our annual Spring Clean Out!

In partnership with the Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park, we’ve been collecting new and gently used clothing for families in the Orchard Park community. The church has generously transformed one of their buildings at 6779 Powers Road, Orchard Park into a fully stocked clothing closet. A wide range of sizes is available year-round during scheduled hours, which can be found on the Family Solutions Center website. This resource has made a meaningful impact.

As this is a district-wide initiative, we encourage everyone to participate in the effort. Donations can be dropped off at any time at the Powers Road location in the bin located behind Busy Bee Hall, where the clothing closet is housed. In addition, volunteers will be available on May 12 from 4:00–6:00 PM. For those who find deadlines motivating, this is a great opportunity to plan ahead and contribute.

If you’ll be home during April break, it’s the perfect time to do some spring cleaning and gather items to donate. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, and thank you in advance for your continued generosity in supporting our Orchard Park community.
