Hawkins Happenings

October 2, 2026

HawkinsHappenings October 2, 2026

We officially made it through September, and Hawkins is settling into a really nice rhythm. Students are learning routines, staff are finding their groove, and there’s already a lot happening across the building.

Our Color Run is here, Recess Run is underway, enrichment has started, and our fourth-grade safeties are out helping around the school. We also completed a successful lockdown drill, and our students and staff did a great job listening and following directions. Thank you to our families for your patience, support, and flexibility as we continue to make small adjustments and settle into the school year.

I continue to feel very lucky to be part of the Hawkins community. I appreciate the way our families support our kids, our staff, and one another. There’s a lot to smile about right now, and I’m looking forward to everything October brings.

We hope to see you tonight at the Hawkins Color Run! Come cheer on our kids, grab a hot dog, enjoy the music, and don’t be surprised if everyone heads home a little more colorful than when they arrived!

Hawkins Color Run

The color run is tonight!

We’ll have an early start from 5:00–5:30 p.m. for students with sensory needs. The Color Run will then be open to everyone from 5:30–7:00 p.m.

The first class will take off at 5:45 p.m. We’ll start with JK and work our way up through the grade levels. Students will run with their classes, and we’re hoping to have staff at the starting line to cheer on their students and maybe even run a lap or two with them!

We’ll be grilling hot dogs during the event, and we’re asking families to bring individually packaged chips or treats to share.

DJ Wade will be on site to keep the music going, and we’ve also invited Kona Ice and Travelin’ Tom’s. They’re donating cups to our winning grade, so there’s a little extra motivation to get those laps in!

Green Oak Township is also planning to join us, pending any emergencies that may come up.

Stop by for a short time or stay a little longer. Run, walk, cheer, eat a hot dog, or just hang out. It’s a fun chance to spend some time together with other Hawkins families.

All students are encouraged to participate in the run, regardless of whether they raised money.

We will start the run with JK and work our way up through the grades. Students will run with their classes, and organizers will be at the starting line to get all of our runners lined up.

During the event, we will be grilling hot dogs and ask that families bring individually packaged treats to share. Any leftover treats will be saved for our Trunk or Treat event next month.

Last Names A–L: Please bring pre-packaged chips
Last Names M–Z: Please bring a pre-packaged dessert or cookies

What we need from you to make this event a success:

  • Register your child through the FundHub site and share their fundraising page with family and friends.

    • You can also submit cash or checks in a labeled envelope. Your student’s teacher can place it in our PTO mailbox, and we will add it to your student’s online fundraising total.

    • Many employers offer 1:1 matching for charitable donations. Those funds will also count toward your student’s total! Please send us an email if you are submitting a matching gift, as processing timelines can be longer for employer matches.

  • Plan to have your child at the run by 5:30 PM so we can keep all classes on schedule.

  • Wear a white T-shirt for the best color effect during the run. Sunglasses are also recommended.

    • Please note that we are using Peacock Powder, which is made from food-grade cornstarch and FDA-approved colors (FD&C). It is non-toxic, non-hazardous, and designed for outdoor social events. More information can be found here.

  • We need volunteers to make this event happen! Volunteer here.

Run Club is off to a great start!

We’re so excited to celebrate 42 runners who reached a 5K achievement!

Since Run Club was cancelled today due to weather, we added 2 laps to everyone’s totalsto make sure our runners didn’t miss out on those miles.

Toe Tokens: Any toe tokens earned this week will be distributed to teachers on Monday for runners to take home.

We’re so proud of all of our Hawkins runners and love seeing their smiles, determination, and excitement each week!

Way to go, Hawkins Run Club!

My name is Frank Shinkonis, and I am the new security officer at Hawkins.

I retired a couple of years ago from Hartland Schools, where I taught high school history for 19 years. Before Hartland, I worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections, where I taught and provided security in high-security juvenile facilities.

I am a Navy veteran and live in South Lyon with my wife and our sons. I coach youth sports, love to hunt, and enjoy working with bonsai trees. I am also a not-so-successful beekeeper.

I am thrilled to join the Hawkins team and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Early Student Pick-Up

We know appointments come up during the school day, and sometimes an early pick-up is unavoidable. To help us protect classroom learning time, we are asking families to let us know about planned early dismissals as early as possible.

If you know your child will need to leave early for an appointment or another non-emergency reason, please call the office in advance. Our office will prepare a pass and get it to the teacher without interrupting instruction. At the appropriate time, the teacher will give the pass to your child, and your child can report to the office to meet you.

As we get closer to dismissal, things become very busy throughout the building. For that reason, we ask that any planned early pick-ups take place before 3:30 p.m. After 3:30 p.m., we will avoid interrupting classrooms for non-emergency, last-minute dismissal changes and ask that students follow their normal dismissal routine.

This small step helps us avoid calling into classrooms while teachers are in the middle of a lesson and keeps learning moving for everyone. It also helps us get your child ready to go when you arrive—so you can make it to those pesky dentist appointments on time!

The McKinny-Vento Act-Support for Families in Temporary Living Situations

Brighton Area Schools is part of a consortium that supports students and families experiencing temporary living situations. Assistance may include financial support for educational needs, referrals for housing and clothing, and other resources and services.

To help ensure students receive the support they need, school staff work to identify students who may be living in situations such as emergency shelters or transitional housing, motels or hotels, cars, parks or other public spaces, or shared housing due to a loss of housing or economic hardship.

The district’s homeless liaison is Starr Acromite, and each school has trained staff members available to help families access support and resources.

For additional information or assistance, please contact Starr Acromite at 810-299-4040.
