CONGRATULATIONS STEPHANIE KAUFMAN CONGRATULATIONS STEPHANIE KAUFMAN

Congratulations to Stephanie Kaufman for winning the Jack Miller Center's Excellence in Civic Education Award Honorable Mention. Stephanie teaches a dual credit American Government course at Black Hills State University for high school students.

Each year, the Jack Miller Center’s Excellence in Civic Education Award recognizes one K-12 teacher and one professor for extraordinary teaching and student engagement. The results of teaching efforts can be difficult to quantify, so we look for actual examples of teachers engaging in the important work of engaging, educating, and inspiring students while fostering civil discourse and critical thinking.

JMC believes that excellent teaching is critically important for America’s future. Our self-governing nation is dependent upon an informed and engaged citizenry if we are to preserve our constitutional democracy. But knowledge of America’s institutional structures is only the beginning of civic learning. We believe every generation of citizens needs to be introduced to the history and ideas behind the American founding and how to make connections to contemporary issues, and it is extraordinary teaching that makes the principles behind our founding live issues for students today.

Each legislative session, high school students from across South Dakota have an opportunity for a firsthand look at the legislative process by serving as pages for the South Dakota Legislature. Pages are appointed to serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate for four to nine days during one of the five term periods.

The page program is a competitive program, so early application is encouraged. The preferred deadline is October 6, 2023 and the final deadline is October 20, 2023.

Application is made through a sponsoring legislator or legislator-elect. Talk to a legislator or legislator-elect and ask for the privilege of them sponsoring you. Not sure who to approach as a sponsor? Any current legislator or legislator-elect can sponsor a page. Click on Find My Legislators to find the legislators in your district; however, a sponsoring legislator may be from any South Dakota district. Find My Legislators

The President Pro Tempore of the Senate selects the pages who will serve in the Senate. The Speaker of the House of Representatives selects the pages who will serve in the House. In early December, you will be notified by the Page Advisor regarding the disposition of your application.
