ANZAC DAY PRAYER ANZAC DAY PRAYER

Gracious and loving God,

the cross of Christ is the sign

of your desire for justice and peace for all.

Open our minds to your vision

as we remember all who suffered

through Australia and New Zealand’s involvement

in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Grant all servicepersons

who sacrificed health and life for the good of all,

the gift of your deep peace.

May we who inherit the freedom for which they fought

become instruments of your peace

in our homes, workplaces and world.

We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen

YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP DAY RUN BY HALOGEN by Taehee, Jonte, Ayesha, Indi, Giordana, Jingwen, Jasmine and Jeanette

On the 20th March, the Student Representative Council and Social Justice Committee went to a conference run by Halogen to celebrate National Young Leader’s Day. The speakers were James Foley, Matthew Pavlich, Simone McGurk and Eliza Greene. Each leader was equally inspiring and all had dreams when they were as young as five, working hard to accomplish them.

JAMES FOLEY

James Foley is an author and illustrator of picture books, middle grade novel and comics. One of his books, called Stellarphant, was voted ‘ Picture Book of the Year’ and it has won multiple awards. Foley started drawing and writing in pre-primary. In Year Seven, he won 3rd Prize for writing a picture book. Foley says that if you want to achieve something, you have to be persistent.

MATTHEW PAVLICH

Matthew Pavlich was very inspiring, especially when reflecting on how to approach hard work: never give up, and follow your dreams, he told us. Pavlich shared inspiring quotes about how you should set realistic goals but don’t push yourself unnecessarily. When you don’t succeed, he claims, you don’t lose but you learn. This obviously connects with Pavlich’s career as a football player, but also connects with all of us in our committee work. Pavlich never gave up on becoming a footballer. For example, when he was injured (he mentioned he had 13 operations, 30 stitches and 3 concussions), he didn’t let that leave him behind. He stepped back on the footy field like nothing happened. Pavlich also taught us a lesson: to follow your dreams.

HON SIMONE MCGURK MLA

We liked Ms McGurk’s speech because she spoke so confidently and told us all of her hard work and personal stories. Ms McGurk was asked to join parliament however, she initially said “no” because the time what not right for her. She later became the State Member for Fremantle. As a child, her father wasn’t around every much so her mother had to take care of Simone and her other four siblings on her own. A few questions I had were, “Why did you want to be a politician?” “If you could be a politician for liberal or labour which one would you choose?”. An important lesson Ms McGurk taught us was to work hard, to be honest and to always to be prepared for anything in life.

ELIZA GREENE

Eliza Greene is a professional surfer. Eliza became the Junior Women’s state champion six times. In the past year, she has participated in numerous surfing competitions with her sister, Mikaela, across the world. Eliza and her sister are called the Greene Sisters or GRNSTR. When COVID came, Eliza had to put a pause on participating in surfing competitions. She decided to create a range of swimwear after she realised no one made wetsuits for women larger than size 13. Eliza was the first person to design a swimsuit for size 18! She is a good role model for young girls around the world of all ages. We all enjoyed her speech because she saw a problem and made a solution. It’s very important for women to have rights not be forced to wear men’s swimwear cause there isn’t a size for them in the women’s range.

We’d like to thank Halogen, Mr Ryan, Ms Maloney and Mrs Anderson for making it possible for us to attend the Young Leader’s Conference. It has given us a chance to figure out what our dreams might be. A big thank you, also, to the leaders that spoke at Halogen.

PROJECT COMPASSION

We would like to thank all our families for their very generous support of our Project Compassion initiative this year. Each class decided on a way of raising money for Caritas and the results were phenomenal. In total, we raised $2665.55 which will be used by Caritas to assist people in poverty around the world. The students should be very proud of their efforts.

YEAR 6 CONFIRMATION

A reminder that our Confirmation Workshop starts at 6pm on Wednesday 10th May in the Parish Hall. Your child and at least one parent needs to attend.

The Confirmation Rehearsal will be in Church on Sat 27th May starting at 9.30am sharp and will finish by 10:30am. Your child and their Sponsor should attend. Confirmation is on Sunday 28th May at 10.30am.

Footy Tipping Competition Update

Round 4

In round 4 of the Footy Tipping Competition, Mr Ryan's favourite team, the Blues, emerged victorious over North Melbourne by 23 points. With the school holidays beginning on Thursday and Easter festivities in full swing, Mr Ryan was delighted to be named the winning tipper of the week. As a result, he was able to enjoy a relaxing coffee break over the holidays courtesy of his Rustico voucher.

Round 5

During the "Gather Round" of round 5, all Footy teams travelled to Adelaide to play. The home teams of Adelaide and Port Adelaide both secured victories, which would have been an exciting result for the local fans. Tom Eardley, who supports Geelong, was the Tipper of the Week winner as his team emerged victorious over the Eagles. Brooke Eardley, who supports Eagles, came in second place for the week. Hopefully, Tom will share his Rustico voucher with Brooke!

Round 6 - ANZAC Day Round

During the ANZAC Day round, we remembered all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. In round 6 of the Queenies P&F Footy Tipping Competition, four perfect tippers earned 9 points each. Congratulations to Brianna, Zara, Franz, and Matthew. Brianna, who achieved a tipping margin of 31 points, was awarded the Tipper of the Week prize. Brianna, please visit the front office to collect your Rustico voucher.
