DHS students organize summer scavenger hunt for families

Every spring after the seniors in Mrs. Jennifer Johnson's Human Development class leave, the remaining juniors are tasked with finding a way to connect with the community. This year, the Davison High School students wanted to figure out a way to celebrate developmental milestones (recognizing letters/sounds/animals) and spending time together as a family. Their solution? A scavenger hunt seemed like the perfect solution to incorporate all of the things they were looking to do- with the bonus of encouraging people to spend time outdoors.

The scavenger hunt is alphabet themed. Each letter corresponds with an animal. Mrs. Johnson said students came up with animals for each letter of the alphabet, then painted them on bricks to be hidden along Black Creek Trail.

Anyone is welcome to walk the Black Creek Trail and look for the 26 hidden alphabet/animal bricks. For families completing the interactive experience, Mrs. Johnson said using the Goosechase app allows hunters to participate in "missions" that correspond to each animal, like answering trivia questions or striking a pose and taking a picture.

"Students are looking for practical ways to connect with the community and foster intellectual and social development," Mrs. Johnson said. "Not only does the scavenger hunt appeal to children with letters, sounds, and animals, but it encourages physical activity and togetherness."

Families can participate in the interactive Goosechase app experience while they are looking for the hidden animals. New join codes for the interactive experience will be posted every week at the Abernathy Park side of the Black Creek Trail.

Mrs. Johnson said Davison Township Parks and Recreation has been a wonderful partner during the planning stages and is allowing her students to run the interactive scavenger hunt for four weeks through July 26.

"I am so proud of the effort put forth by this group of students," Mrs. Johnson said. "Every year the community outreach project looks a little different, and when this group told me what they wanted to do I wasn't sure if we would be able to pull it off in time. Not only did they meet every necessary deadline to have it set up and completed before exam week, they also surpassed my expectations with the quality of their work."

To ensure that the maximum number of people get to enjoy the experience, it is important that bricks are not removed from their hiding spots.

DMS students earn Art awards

Following her first year of teaching art at Davison Middle School, teacher Mrs. Erin Mohrman selected and awarded a student from each grade level to receive art awards.

"I've always done art awards," Mrs. Mohrman said. "I only have 7th and 8th grade students so I gave one to each grade."

The awards were presented based on the student's creativity, craftsmanship and work ethic.

Congratulations to art award recipients seventh grader Peyton Van Jeune and eighth grader Ella Grubb.

And since we are on the subject of art, be sure to check out the link below featuring some of the art work that was on display at the school by second semester art students.

Central and Gates to welcome new Dean of Students for 2025-26 school year

Gates teacher Brielle Bayliss named as Dean of Students for new position at Central and Gates Elementary schools

Gates Elementary teacher Brielle Bayliss has been selected to serve in the newly created position of Dean of Students for Gates and Central elementary buildings. She begins her new job duties July 1.

“As we have analyzed behavior and perception data over the past few years it is clear that there is a need for added student behavior and relational support at Central and Gates Elementary,” said Superintendent Matt Lobban. “The role of the Dean will be critical to help attend to this need and Brielle will be a tremendous asset to both schools.”

“Brielle has demonstrated strong leadership, a commitment to students, and the ability to support those around her throughout her time in the district,” said Christine Kuzinski, Director of Human Resources and Operations. “We look forward to all she will bring to this new role and are confident that both schools will benefit greatly from her leadership.”

Central and Gates Elementary schools are the largest elementary buildings in the district with student populations of nearly 575 and 515, respectively.

“I feel incredibly honored and excited to serve as the Dean of Students for both Central and Gates Elementary next year,” Brielle said. “I love the Davison community so much and I am excited that this new role will broaden my ability to build strong relationships with students, families and staff while supporting a safe, positive and inclusive school environment.”

Brielle joined the staff at Gates Elementary five years ago and has taught first, third and fourth grades. Prior to coming to Davison, Brielle taught second grade at Cook Elementary in Grand Blanc.

Brielle said she definitely considers herself a lifelong learner. She has a bachelor of science degree in psychology and elementary education from Palm Beach Atlantic University, a master's in Teaching Elementary Education from Liberty University and an Education Specialist Degree in administration and leadership K-12 from Liberty University.

In her spare time, Brielle loves to spend time with her 4-year-old yellow lab (Boomer), taking him for walks and taking him to the pool for a swim. She also enjoys playing volleyball, reading books and is extremely passionate about traveling!

Brielle comes from a close-knit family of five. Her parents are living the dream in South Florida. Her older brother, Trey, is a general manager at a country club in Denver, Colorado, where he lives with his wife. Brielle is also a new aunt as her sister, a Grand Blanc eye doctor, and brother-in-law just welcomed baby Bennett just a little over a week ago.

Athletics Athletics

Just a reminder that in order to try out for a sport, student athletes must have a completed registration form and current physical on file with the Athletic Office.

The form only needs to be completed one time per school year, per athlete. In addition to filling out this form, a current sports physical dated on or after 4/15/25 will need to be turned into the DHS athletic office.

Once all athletic registration papers are completed and turned in, a yellow "all clear" card will be issued to the athlete for the first day of tryouts. Yellow cards are to be given to the coach on the first day of tryouts. If an athlete does not present a card, they will not be allowed to participate in tryouts until they have a yellow card.

A STUDENT SHALL NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY PRACTICE SESSION OR CONTEST UNTIL THIS ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND THE VALID SPORTS PHYSICAL HAS BEEN TURNED INTO THE DHS ATHLETIC OFFICE.
