May Newsletter
💗 Heritage Heights School 💗
Dear Husky Families! 🐾
May seems to have snuck up on us! Where has the time gone? May is a time of transitions, as we finish this current year with an eye on the next. Summer is around the corner, yet there are so many events and activities to look forward to this month. With field trips and celebrations, May offers the opportunity to wrap up our year on a high note!
Our Family Dance was a great way to kick of April, with many families and community members in attendance. The evening was filled with swaying palm trees, balloons, games and Kona Ice treats. People took to the dance floor as the DJ pumped out family friendly music for the dances. Special thanks to school council members who worked to bring this event together for all to enjoy!
Fine Arts took centre stage with the production of Heist Quest. The hours of dedication from directors, actors, stage hands and the tech crew were evident in the excellent performances. We were thrilled to watch students take on their roles with enthusiasm and confidence. Bravo! A huge shout out to Mr. Berrigan and Mrs. Lehmann for taking our students to new heights!
Our Quebec Trip is finally here! After months of planning and hard work, 22 students and 4 staff left on an early flight to enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Ottawa and Quebec. We hope the experiences are memorable and inspire a love of cultures and languages.
Badminton season filled the athletics calendar this month. Several students enjoyed learning and playing the game, friendly competition with other schools and attending tournaments. Congratulations to our athletes and coaches! Next up, track and field! We will keep you posted on dates.
We are in the final stretch of the year. Keeping up with assignments and routines is critical for our students to reach the finish line successfully! As the evenings get warmer and lighter, it is harder to stay focused on school projects and assignments. We appreciate the continued support from all of our families!
With appreciation,
Ms. Rita Marie Rahn (Principal)
Mrs. Shanda Dupras (Vice Principal)

Class Placements for 2025 - 2026
It is the professional responsibility of administrators and teachers to create class configurations each year that balance students' needs and available resources. When making decisions for class placement, a great deal of time and thought is spent creating classes where students will successfully learn together. In order to create balanced, equitable and productive classroom environments, we take into consideration the following factors:
- Class size targets
- Academic readiness
- Learning Support needs
- Specific talents & abilities
- Gender balance
- Social connections
- Emotional/behavioural needs
The team at Heritage Heights has a complete picture of these areas; we are confident in the class lists we create. As such, we do not accept requests for specific teachers but do accept letters of parental concern regarding your child's academic and/or social emotional needs. Please submit requests, with the title Placement 2025-2026, to heritage@fsd38.ab.ca

Meeting Our School Improvement Goals Support - Success - Engagement
All school divisions in Alberta create a plan for improvement. Schools then set goals that align with this plan. In Foothills School Division and at Heritage Heights, we are working on Support, Success, and Engagement for all learners. The following sections reflect our work within the school and community.
SUPPORT
Learning Services 🐾
Supporting Literacy Growth in K–3 Classrooms
At our school, we are committed to helping all students develop strong foundational literacy skills. Following the January Provincial Literacy Assessments, we identified Kindergarten to Grade 3 students who may benefit from additional support. These assessments highlighted students performing below the 25th percentile compared to same-age peers across the province.
To ensure no student is overlooked, teacher observations were also considered. This led to further reading assessments in March and early April. Our Learning Coach worked with identified students to evaluate their reading accuracy and comprehension, allowing us to group them by similar reading abilities.
After Spring Break, our Educational Assistants began working daily with these small groups to provide targeted literacy support. These sessions focus on essential reading skills such as:
Phonemic awareness
Sound blending
Word building
Reading and understanding decodable texts
These interventions will continue through the end of the school year. We will reassess student progress in June to measure growth and inform next steps. We are also looking for parent volunteers to help support literacy development in our Grade 1–5 classrooms. Volunteers can make a big impact by reading aloud with students and engaging them in meaningful conversations about texts.
If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Angela Clarke, our Learning Coach, at clarkea@fsd38.ab.ca.
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in every child’s literacy journey!

Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental health is a state of well-being, and we all have it. We might have a mental illness, and we might not. Either way, we can all feel well. We can all have good mental health. It is about having a sense of purpose, strong relationships, feeling connected to our communities, knowing who we are, coping with stress and enjoying life. And it is never too early or too late to get there. But it is not just about what you do for yourself, by yourself—everyone needs healthy and supportive places to work, live and learn.
Hats On! - May 7th
Every year CMHA dedicates a week in May to raise the awareness of Mental Health. This year Mental Health Week will run May 5-9. Hats On! for Mental Health Day will take place on May 7th.
Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.
Connecting the Dots Family Conference 2025
Inclusion Foothills are hosting a Family Conference at the start of May to share valuable information with parents and caregivers about resources and inclusion in the community.
It will be an education packed day that covers many topics relevant to families who have children with disabilities of any type or severity. All of the information is on the registration page: Connecting the Dots Family Conference 2025.
SUCCESS
Heist Quest Performance
🎭 Hear ye, hear ye! Let it be known throughout the halls of Heritage Heights that the grand performance of Heist Quest, directed by the noble Mr. Berrigan with the steadfast support of Lady Lehmann, was a theatrical triumph to be remembered for ages! The stage was set with splendor, the lighting glowed like enchanted lanterns, and the acting—verily!—was of the highest order. Our young thespians delivered a performance worthy of royal applause. Bravo to all involved in this magical and most gallant production!
Husky Hellos! Student Matters Team
Our spirit-filled Student Matters Team has been working hard to make Heritage Heights a place where every student feels seen, valued, and proud to be a Husky! Focused on building a welcoming and inclusive school culture, this amazing group leads with heart, creativity, and energy. You can often find them outside in the mornings—alongside our beloved mascot, Howie the Husky—greeting students as they step off the bus with high fives, warm hellos, and even the occasional hug. Their presence sets a positive tone for the day and reminds everyone that at Heritage Heights, we all matter.
Student - Led Conferences
A heartfelt thank you to all the families who attended our Student-Led Conferences the week before spring break and took the time to celebrate the learning journeys of their children! It was a joy to witness the pride and confidence students showed as they shared their progress, goals, and accomplishments. Our teachers, alongside their students, transformed classrooms into warm and welcoming spaces filled with interactive learning stations, student-created displays, and thoughtful touches that made the evening truly special. From fancy fruit drinks and high tea to personalized menus and creative setups, parents were treated to an unforgettable experience. Thank you for your continued support in making learning a shared celebration at Heritage Heights!

HUSKY HOUR
On April 7, 2025 Husky Hour was a celebration of our winter athletics teams... and we had a lot to celebrate! Basketball teams placed very well in zone finals, bringing home two silver and one bronze medal. Method Hockey players were acknowledge for their dedication and hard work. We finished the day with a dunk challenge. Students of all ages performed tricks to get their best dunk completed in three attempts. The judges were wowed by costumes, shear skills and enthusiasm!
April 17, 2025 was the Husky Ice Showcase!! We celebrated the students who have given time and dedication to improving hockey skills over the first 3/4 of the year in the option blocks. Students from grades 6-9 enjoyed cheering on their class mates as they battled it out on the ice. Thanks to Coaches Chris and Graham from Method Hockey for a great season!!
After each break, we meet with students to review the school expected behaviours. On Monday, April 28, 2025 we reviewed our expectations and discussed a few common concerns we have noted. Two areas of concern are: the inappropriate language on the playground and classrooms (swearing, racial comments, name calling) and keeping hands and feet to selves. We were very clear about what words we use to spread kindness and include others. Please reinforce this at home in your conversations.
Underground Spirit Week
🕵️♂️🎉 This past week, the halls of Heritage Heights were buzzing with curiosity and laughter as our teachers secretly took part in an Underground Spirit Week! Each day brought a new surprise—students were taught by undercover agents in dark shades, Hans and Franz pumped up the energy in gym class, and true Canadian pride shone through with staff rocking their finest Canadian tuxedos (yes, full denim!). Just when students thought they’d seen it all, a tropical breeze swept in with a wave of Hawaiian shirts and leis. The mystery, creativity, and school spirit kept everyone guessing and grinning—what a legendary week of fun and connection!
🌺 Aloha from the Dance Floor!
Our tropical-themed school dance was a blast! The gym was transformed into a paradise with blow-up palm trees, disco lights, and the beats of the best DJ in town keeping the dance floor packed. To top it off, the Kona Ice truck rolled in, serving up cool treats on a warm evening—an absolute hit with students and families alike! Thanks to your amazing support, ticket sales raised $1443.64 toward our playground fundraiser. Mahalo to everyone who came out and made the night unforgettable! 🌴🎶🍧
Alien Inline Skating 🛼
The energy in the gym has been rolling high as every student at Heritage Heights had the chance to participate in our exciting inline skating program! With the help of passionate and patient instructors, students of all ages learned the basics and built the confidence to glide, turn, and zoom around the gym like pros. It’s been amazing to watch our Huskies push past their comfort zones, laugh through the wobbles, and celebrate their skating success—one stride at a time!
