Get Ready For the New Year!
December is a very busy month! As we get closer to the holidays, students get excited and often engage in more challenging behaviors. Adults may need to use prompts, precorrection, and acknowledgments at a higher rate throughout the month. December is also a great time to start thinking about your plan for returning in January.
It's important to re-teach ALL of the school-wide behavior expectations after a long break to remind students (and staff!) of all the expected appropriate behaviors across all school settings. If you have data from past years, look for specific months, locations, or times of day that generate a lot of unwanted behaviors and be ready to prevent those big spikes. Classroom teachers will need to remind students of the classroom expectations and routines, too, and give them plenty of practice time and feedback!
Along with re-teaching expected behaviors, don't forget to reinforce students at high rates for using the expected behaviors. Students in small group or individualized interventions may need some extra reinforcement as they get back to their routines, too.
If your school behavior team is in need of a refresher or booster, you can email us at pbis@astate.edu or call 870-972-2287.
Project PEACE Happenings
It's hard to believe we're already in Year 3 of Project PEACE! This DOJ grant has provided training, support, and funding for schools to assess and action plan around school climate, PBIS, school safety, and community engagement. Schools have received funding for some wonderful data and intervention tools such as PBIS Rewards, LiveSchool, and Navigate 360's Compass Curriculum, as well as materials, training, and licensing fees for programs such as Capturing Kids' Hearts and #nofilter.
Throughout the past 2 years, schools have worked to improve school climate and increase student, family, staff, and community engagement. All 7 schools have shown improvement on their school climate assessment scores and we look forward to seeing even more improvement in the new year. A big shout out to Annie Camp Jr. High, Fox Meadow School of Creative Media, LISA Academy West Middle School, Horace Mann Magnet Middle School, Holt Middle School, John L Colbert Middle School, and Ramay Jr. High School!!
