Action Needed: Family input on state survey
Through the Illinois State Board of Education, families have an opportunity to share their thoughts on the important elements of Leyden’s school effectiveness in a state survey called 5Essentials. In order to remain compliant with this state requirement, Leyden needs a minimum of 20-percent participation from families. At this time, we are at 7-percent at East and 5-percent at West for participation. Input is kept confidential and helps us understand our families and as we make decisions moving forward.
The input provides Leyden administrators with important information that helps to better understand our families, students and staff. We encourage families to please share feelings, insights, and perspective with us via this survey, which opens tomorrow and remains open through March 13. Direct emails will be sent tomorrow as well, including the link.
Leyden's spring musical opens March 5
Leyden Fine Arts presents, In the Heights, a musical running March 5-7 at 7 p.m., with a matinee performance Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m.
In the Heights is a musical about a close-knit Latino community over three sweltering summer days. The story follows Usnavi, the owner of a local bodega who dreams of winning the lottery so he can return to his native Dominican Republic and restore his father's old business. Several residents chase their "sueñitos" (little dreams) while overcoming mounting obstacles.
The performances take place in the West Leyden auditorium, 1000 Wolf Road. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and free for Leyden students with an I.D.
This year’s production features over 80 students from both campuses, showcasing incredible talent on stage and behind the scenes.
Trades: Future Focus Week starts tomorrow
Future Focus week starts tomorrow and will highlight careers in the skilled trades. Students will have the opportunity to sit in on panel discussions about barbering and cosmetology, plumbing, nursing, and advanced manufacturing.
Choosing a career or skilled trade as a postsecondary plan offers practical advantages in today's job market. Vocational education and apprenticeships provide hands-on experiences, developing real-world skills that lead to quicker entry into the workforce. This approach not only enhances employability but also fosters a sense of accomplishment as individuals contribute directly to building and maintaining essential aspects of society. Opting for a career or skilled trade provides a quicker path to personal growth, financial stability, and community impact.

Eagle mascot "Vega" celebrates birthday
On Thursday, February 12, (or 2-12 like the district number!) Leyden's eagle mascot "Vega," celebrated a birthday! Named by students during Leyden High School’s 100th Anniversary celebration last year, Vega has quickly become a symbol of Leyden pride and spirit. Both campuses joined in the fun with birthday celebrations that brought students and staff together to honor the blue and gold eagle who continues to soar at the heart of our school community.
One of Leyden's oldest alums celebrates 100 years
One of Leyden's oldest alumni and employee celebrated her 100th birthday on February 6. Many in the community will remember 1944 East graduate Dolores Hanson from Leyden's 100th Anniversary documentary, and her various appearances at event last year. Her lifelong connection to Leyden is a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact our school has on generations of students. Happy 100th birthday, Dolores!
