Remarkable Women of Garrett

The Youghiogheny Glades Chapter, NSDAR, working with the Garrett County Historical Society and community contributors, has developed a series called Remarkable Women of Garrett County. Beverly Railey Robinson, a volunteer at the Friend Family Association of America Museum & Library, is the coordinator. The publications are available at libraries and museums and will soon be digitized.

To-date, ten Friendsville women have been featured. The current window of the Friend Family Association of America Museum & Library displays photos and brief descriptions of their work. A doll of Ina Jenkins Hicks, created by Ellen Brenders Cowgill, is also on display. Linda and Ron Nair, also FFAA local volunteers, are responsible for the window design. In addition, coloring sheets created by Carol Corbin, a Friend descendant and genealogist, will be available for children.

The Remarkable Women of Garrett County with Friendsville ties include: Odessa Friend Bishoff, Patricia Friend Bowser, Ethel Fike Friend, Ina Jenkins Hicks, Ruth Hoye, Evelyn Guard Olsen, Patricia Friend Thompson and Martha Alice Friend Weimer. While their contributions were many, brief summaries of their lives follow:

Odessa Friend Bishoff was born on March 23, 1886 in Sang Run, MD. Her contributions included her work as an early woman teacher and Principal in Garrett County. She was active in Oakland civic affairs. “Dessie” was instrumental in the founding of the Friend Family Society, later called the Friend Family Association of America. She helped with dedication of the John Friend, Sr. historical marker, a significant event for the Friendsville community. She is listed on the Founders’ Roll of the Garrett County Historical Society. She died in 1965 and is buried in the Hoyes Cemetery.

Patricia Friend Bowser was born on November 25, 1952 in New Eagle, PA. Her contributions included being a Life Member of Friendsville VFD and Northern Garrett Co. Rescue Squad, where she held many offices. She served as Chaplain, Garrett County Fire & Rescue Association and was an active Hospice volunteer. This extremely active and well-known woman was inducted into Maryland State Firemen’s Association “Hall of Flame” and Garrett Co. Women’s Hall of Fame. She died on August 10, 2015.

Ethel Fike Friend was born on May 11, 1902 in Friendsville, MD. She wrote the History of Sand Spring Church & Memories at Sunset. She helped to procure the historical marker for John Friend, Sr. and donated an important collection of books, photos and ledger at FFAA. She died on October 4, 2002 and is buried in Sand Spring Cemetery.

Ina Jenkins Hicks was born in Friendsville, MD. Known to many as “Ina Claire,” her contributions as an active and loving member of the community are extensive. In terms of history, she has served as the Librarian and Genealogist for the Friend Family Association of America since 1985. She has compiled over 80 notebooks and 200 files on families. Ina is responsible for answering the many inquiries that come to FFAA. She worked with her close friend, Crede Calhoun, on the innovative Friendsville Interactive History Tour. She has received many awards. Most recently, Ina received the National Society, DAR Women in American History Award and Medal.

Ruth Hoye was born on August 15, 1897 in Sang Run, MD. She assisted her cousin, Captain Charles Hoye, with extensive research & writing about early Garrett County Families. Her work helped to preserve valuable records that would otherwise have been destroyed in a house fire. She served as an early woman Judge of Elections & Register of Wills. Her death occurred on March 8, 1991, and she is buried in Upper Sang Run Cemetery.

Evelyn Guard Olsen was born in 1900 in Friendsville. She is known for her book, Indian Blood, and the article, Swamp Sam, found in the Glades Star, Journal of the Garrett County Historical Society journal. She was a Founding Member of the Friend Family Association of America. Evelyn died in 1992 and is buried in Grand View Memorial Park, Glendale, CA.

Patricia Friend Thompson was born in the home of her grandmother, Mary Kiser, who ran an “Old Folks Home” in Deer Park, MD. She is a highly experienced genealogist & historian and helpful to many researching their families. Her first book was published in 2007 and by now, she has written 31 books. She has files for over 24,000 Friends and for 6,000 other local families. Patty Thompson is an active member of both the Friend Family Association of America and the Youghiogheny Glades Chapter, NSDAR.

Martha Alice Friend Weimer entered the world on June 3, 1844, as one of the thirteen children born to Israel Friend and Dorcas Willison. Israel Friend traced his lineage back to Old John Friend of Friendsville, adding historical depth to Martha's family heritage. In September 1903, Martha made a significant move by purchasing lots 44 and 35 in the Town of Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. Rumor has it that during the bustling Chautauqua activities, the Colonial housed up to 37 boarders, with many more visitors flocking to savor the culinary delights crafted by Martha and her daughter. Martha and Jose exemplified entrepreneurial spirit, overcoming societal obstacles to establish a thriving business. Their residence on G Street stands as a testament to their legacy, its charm and integrity enduring through time.

Ruth Hinebaugh Umbel, a trailblazer in education and hospitality, embarked on a journey that spanned decades, leaving an enduring legacy in her wake. Armed with a master's degree in education, Umbel dedicated 20 years of her life to shaping young minds as a devoted schoolteacher. Her commitment to education not only impacted countless students but also laid the foundation for her future endeavors. Beyond the classroom, Umbel's entrepreneurial spirit and visionary mindset led her to establish the first bed and breakfast in Deep Creek Lake, setting a precedent for the hospitality industry in the region. Her pioneering efforts not only provided travelers with a cozy retreat but also bolstered tourism and economic growth in the area. Umbel's influence extended beyond the realms of education and hospitality as she actively engaged in community service and advocacy. Serving on the board of the Ruth Enlow Library, she championed literacy and access to knowledge, ensuring that her community had a vibrant hub for learning and intellectual enrichment. Moreover, her active involvement in county, state, and national politics underscored her commitment to civic engagement and social progress. Remarkably, her passion for politics was evident from a young age, as she embarked on her political journey at the tender age of 12, distributing election pamphlets for Dwight D. Eisenhower on the streets of Friendsville.

Marilyn Moors, a distinguished educator and community leader, exemplifies the power of lifelong learning and civic stewardship. As a former professor at Frostburg State University, Moors inspired generations of students with her passion for learning and her unwavering dedication to academic excellence. Her influence transcended the confines of the classroom, as she actively contributed to the cultural and intellectual vibrancy of her community. Moors' love for quilting not only fostered creativity and camaraderie but also became a catalyst for community building and cultural preservation. Her pivotal role in establishing the Friendsville Library Quilters highlighted her commitment to promoting artistic expression and preserving cherished traditions. Moreover, her involvement in the Barn Quilts initiative in Garrett County showcased her dedication to celebrating local heritage and fostering pride in the community's rich cultural tapestry. In addition to her contributions to the arts, Moors' commitment to honoring veterans and preserving local history was exemplified through her writing of the military honors as part of the Friendsville Interactive Tour. Through this initiative, she ensured that the sacrifices of veterans were commemorated, and their stories were preserved for future generations.
