JUNIORS: HERE IS WHAT TO FOCUS ON NEXT

KEEP YOUR GRADES UP! One of the most important things right now! Getting/keeping your GPA as high as possible will give you the most opportunities for scholarships and grants. IT's also the best way to keep your post-high-school options open.

Should you go to college, or another route?

Hey, I made a video and a whole newsletter about that, HERE! (You saw this video way back in the fall).

Apprenticeships? See the write-up above!

"Scholarship Resume:" Start gathering together information on classes you have taken, service you have been involved in, work history, leadership, and so forth. It's easier if all of these things are in one place so that you can easily access and add to them as you do scholarships. Also...if you are lacking in community service and other categories, this will help you see what areas you can strengthen.

Speaking of Scholarships: Some scholarships are not based on being a senior, so you can start looking for those...and there are some for seniors that open/close in the summer and early fall to look for (even before my newsletters start showing up). You should also become familiar with what scholarships are offered at the schools you are considering. Here are a few: https://oregongoestocollege.org/pay/scholarships

SAT/ACT: If you are considering going to a 4 year university, you should consider taking one of these tests. 70% schools are no longer requiring them for admission, but some are, and it can matter for scholarships. I'd recommend signing up to take one of these in the summer or fall, that way you have time to take it again if you want to. Schools will take your highest score. Look at which schools you are interested in to help you decide if this is something you want to do. FYI, community colleges never require these tests.

Career Choices: Start thinking about the way you want to spend your days. You do NOT have to know the answer to this now, but it is worth thinking about what kinds of jobs you might like to have, so you can consider your choices for later. There are career interest surveys available online that you can access for free, that can help you start thinking about your plans. Start here!

"College" lists: Whether you are thinking about community college, trade school, university, or apprenticeship, use your time from now to next fall to start to build your list of options. Try to get a list of 4-5 options that you can consider...even if you are "SURE" you know where you want to go. This way, you will know that you have looked at all of your best options, when fall comes you will be more ready to apply, and you will know better what is needed including classes that might be required (Languages? Math?). You can check out all of the colleges in Oregon here: http://oregongoestocollege.org/colleges

Article on school choices here: http://oregongoestocollege.org/blog/making-your-decision-about-where-go-college

College Visits: Whenever possible, I am a big advocate for visiting a campus before you go to attend. There is nothing like being there, to help you determine if you like the size and feel of the school and see if it feels like the right fit for you.

Chemeketa Pre-Apprenticeship program

For 18+ or turning 18 over the summer:

Get this! Pre-apprenticeship costs are covered for qualifying applicants. This includes tuition and fees for up to two classes, materials and supplies, and OSHA 10 and First-Aid courses. Successful pre-apprentices will receive tools, boots, safety clothes, and gas vouchers (up to $650).

APR 101, Trade Skills Fundamentals, is the required class for pre-apprentices. Summer quarter begins June 21. Want to apply for a career in one of these fields (OR, even know what it takes to apply for an apprenticeship)? Take a look at these screenshots (and full attached applications below)!

*Notice that related work experience is a lot of points...if you can get a related job, it helps you score higher towards getting into the program. (Also, Pre-apprenticeship is on the list, which I just listed above).

Scholarship Information/Tips from OSAC

If your students have applied for OSAC Scholarships, they may be hearing about their eligibility now and over the coming weeks. Scholarship staff and committees are fast at work determining this year’s recipients. Student(s) will receive notification via email and can monitor via their OSAC Student Portal.

  • Tips for After Submitting the OSAC Scholarship Application: https://oregonstudentaid.gov/scholarships-after-submit.aspx
  • Tips for After Being Awarded an OSAC Scholarship: https://oregonstudentaid.gov/scholarships-after-award.aspx

If you students have applied for other scholarships, now is the time for them to check in about the process for receiving the scholarship(s) at their chosen institution. Often students forget to tell the organization where they are going to attend and this can delay having the funds ready for fall term.

  • Remind them, it is never too late to look for scholarships AND that they should continue to apply each year of college!

Oregon Promise: LAST CHANCE!!

The Oregon Promise Application deadline is fast approaching. For students graduating this June, the deadline is Wednesday, June 1, 2022 by 5:00 pm. They must also file a FAFSA or ORSAA by that deadline as well.

  • There is no EFC/Income limit for the Class of 2022 applicants.
  • 2.0 cumulative HS GPA or higher, or a 145 grade on all GED® tests.

FAFSA: Not too late...

Remember, if you don't file a FAFSA, you have no chance at the following:

  • PELL Grants: (Up to $6450) plus loans and work study
  • Oregon Promise: Up to $4,128 per year (everyone who applies this year may get money, see above)
  • Oregon Opportunity Grant: (EFC less than 8,000), up to $4,692)
  • The school you are attending's scholarships (in many cases).

It's not too late and I CAN HELP YOU DO IT! Email me :)

What is "Work Study" (regarding FAFSA and financial aid)

Federal Work-Study funding helps provide part-time jobs for students with financial need. Being awarded Work-Study funds allows you to apply for jobs that specifically have the Work-Study designation. If you are awarded Work-Study and secure a work study job, you will be paid monthly for hours worked.

Here is a nice page (and 1 minute video) from OSU about work study!
