Week 33
Back to the Beaver Pond!
Dear Elmore School Families,
As we bid farewell to the month of May, we had a decent week, with the weather being more cooperative. We only had four days of school as Monday schools were closed for Memorial Day. This week we also hosted a couple of 6th grade students as part of the Maple Leaf Program which matches students with work place experiences within the area.
During Literacy this week students worked on their persuasive writing, practiced spelling word, and did a lot of reading. I also began doing some end of the year assessments with a focus on reading fluency and decoding words.
During math first graders moved onto a new unit with a focus on adding and subtracting within 100. Second graders also began a new unit with a focus on adding and subtracting within 1000, and third graders are learning about fractions and their relationship to whole numbers on a number line.
On Thursday, we had our final ECO class. Students hiked from the school to the Beaver ponds on the Ridgeline trail on Elmore Mountain. When we arrived at the beaver pond (which we have visited every fall and spring for the past few years), we were surprised to see that the water had mostly drained from the pond. It appears there was a breach in the wall of the dam. Students hypothesized what might of happened. What we don not know is: Did the pond drain and then the beaver left (due to natural causes) or did the beaver(s) abandon the pond to find another habitat which then caused the deterioration of the dam. We were able to explore the smaller pond below the first pond which still held water, but there did not appear to be any signs of recent beaver action. On our way back to the school we stopped to play for few minutes of forest choice near the brook by the campground.
On Friday we celebrated our class reward with a "beach day"! We also had a wonderful Hot Lunch hosted by the Carbine-March family, which coincidentally went with our theme. Students enjoyed chicken skewers, chicken fried Rice, watermelon, and brownies for dessert.
The chicks have continued to thrive and they are growing quickly! We have two more chicks due to hatch in the next few days! At this point the older chicks will probably go to the permeant home to make room for the new hatchlings. If anyone is interested in taking one of the chicks home, please reach out to Annmarie as she has a plan. Otherwise she will take them all to her home to be raised and will be added to her current flock.
Our next Family Hot Lunch (TBD) will be on Friday, June 13th provided by the Soriano Family.
Sandwiches or Salads are available for lunch next Friday.
Please submit your school lunch orders by sunday evening at 6:00 pm.
Lastly, please take a moment to complete the brief LSUU Family Engagement Survey found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc0XZV9NP-r27xISrM2FPGsqpp9D-TbKprdw1zMaIsnqkhRYg/viewform . The results of this survey are used to help with future planning, and the data is reviewed by our parent advisory councils, school-based leadership teams, school boards, and administrative leadership teams. Your feedback is extremely important as we work to always grow and improve as an organization.
