April & May Newsletter
Waltham Elementary School - Let's Go, Hawks!

It’s hard to believe we are already closing in on the end of the school year! With so many activities, important dates, and updates to share, I have combined our April and May newsletters into one for your convenience. This will allow you to plan ahead and save key May dates as well.
This is truly one of the most exciting times of the year as we celebrate the incredible accomplishments and growth of our students. I also want to take a moment to sincerely thank you—our families—for your continued support, partnership, and willingness to step up in so many ways throughout the year. Whether volunteering, supporting events, or working alongside us to support your children, you play an essential role in making our school such a special place. Together, we have built a school community that we can all be proud of.
As we look ahead, I want to keep you informed about our ongoing space needs. It is no secret that we are currently working beyond the capacity of our building as we serve our growing student population. To help address this, we will be adding an additional set of trailers that will provide six more classroom spaces. While this will support us in the short term, we will continue to thoughtfully explore long-term solutions that best meet the needs of our students and staff.
Below you will find several important dates, with additional details included further down in the newsletter.
Thank you again for being such an important part of our school community. We are grateful for your continued partnership and look forward to finishing the year strong together while celebrating all that our students have accomplished.
Mrs. Melanie Lukacsy,
Principal
Spring Dinner Appreciation
A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Elizabeth Newell and her dedicated team for making this year’s Spring Dinner such a wonderful success! Our students and staff truly enjoyed the delicious meal from The Cheese Shop, the cake from Hy-Vee, and all of the thoughtful table decorations and special touches throughout the event. We are also so grateful for the staff tote bags and gift cards—such a generous and appreciated gesture.
We also want to extend our thanks to our photographer, Jen Heredia, for being there to capture class photos and candid moments throughout the evening. These memories will be treasured for years to come.
We are incredibly thankful for the time, effort, and care that our PTCC puts into events like this. It truly takes all hands to make an evening like this come together, and we are so fortunate to have such a supportive and committed group helping our school thrive!
Illinois Science Assessment
Our 5th and 8th grade students will be taking the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) from April 21–23. This is the final state assessment for the school year, and we want our students to feel confident and prepared to do their best.
Please help set your child up for success by ensuring they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and bring a pair of earbuds on each testing day. Thank you for your support in helping our students finish strong!

The Booster Club is wrapping up its year. Bowling and Track are the last events of the year for the booster club. The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 19th at 3:30. We are looking for a President to replace Jody Pawlak. Big shout out to Jody for her help in starting our Booster Club and stepping up to be an officer. You will be dearly missed. During that meeting, we will discuss fundraisers for next year, so if that is your jam, we are looking for people willing to help lead the charge with in-person, community-based fundraising events! --- Nina Mitchell, Booster Club Secretary

Final May Atten-Dance
Our May Atten-Dance on Friday, May 22nd, will be extra special this year, generously sponsored by Mrs. Hewitt and her family! 💃🕺
As she prepares to retire after many dedicated years in our district, we want to take a moment to celebrate Mrs. Hewitt and the incredible impact she has made. From warmly greeting families on the phone to being the friendly, familiar face in our front office, she has been a constant source of care and connection for our school community. 💙 While we will certainly miss her welcoming voice and daily presence, we are so grateful for all she has given to our students, staff, and families over the years. Thank you, Mrs. Hewitt, for everything—and for helping us go out with a bang at this month’s Atten-Dance! 🎉 We wish you all the best in this exciting next chapter—you’ve truly earned it!

Turning Goals Into Growth
- Strengthening Math Instruction - This year, we’re transitioning to the new Illustrative Math program to deepen student understanding. Our staff is undergoing specialized training to bring this new and improved curriculum to the classroom.
Fostering a Safe, Inclusive, and Positive Climate - Our school culture is built on strong relationships. We're committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment where every student feels welcome and supported to be their authentic self.
Increasing Student Attendance and Engagement - Our attendance incentive programs were a big hit last year—so they’re back and even better! Students will once again have chances to win awesome prizes just for showing up and giving their best each day.
Strengthening Staff Development Aligned to School Priorities - Our professional learning this year is focused on the things that matter most to students: math instruction, use of AI in education, grading practices, and meaningful assessment.
Enhancing Communication and Community Outreach - We are committed to keeping you connected. We will continue to use our newsletters, social media, and in-person events to ensure you feel like a valued partner in your child's education.

- Any student absences not communicated to the office by 10 a.m. will receive a phone call from the school.
Student Arrival
- Students that do not ride the bus should be dropped off/picked up in the car line in the front of the building. When entering the parking lot, cars should veer to the right and enter the pick-up/drop-off line.

- Unless written notice or a phone call from a parent/guardian is received by the school office one hour prior to dismissal, students will be sent home on the bus.
- Cars should not line up for the end-of-day car line until 15 minutes prior to student dismissal. If you arrive early, you will be asked to park your vehicle in a parking space until the appropriate time.
- If you need to buckle a child into your vehicle, please pull forward into a parking space after they get into your car. We need to keep our car line moving at a steady pace.
- Please stay in your car after you pull up in front of the building during dismissal.
