Hyatt's Updates for March

Hyatt's Updatesfor March

Office Greetings

Dear Hyatt Elementary Families,

March is a great time of year as there is something for everyone occurring. We can anticipate winter coming to an end and a rejuvenating spring just around the corner. There are seasonal tournaments, spring sports, hiding gold from leprechauns, and yes, March is also Reading Month! Why wouldn't you feel excited? As with last month's updates, we are also continuing our focus maintaining a healthy mind and body to support our learning. This month's Positivity Project will focus on the character traits of Love of Learning and Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others.

As always, we hope you find the information and updates below helpful. Please feel free to contact us or your child's teacher with any questions.

Ready for some sunshine,

Mr. Strickert and Mrs. Carter

Every Child Every Day!

We're Wild About Reading! We're Wild About Reading!

March is Reading Month and we are "We're Wild About Reading" at Hyatt! Reading Month is a national celebration in our schools highlighting the joys and importance of reading. This month there will be activities, guest readers, a Family Night and even giveaways to encourage reading! Please see the calendar below for building highlights and look for more classroom specific information from your child's teacher and let's all get Wild About Reading!

March 16th is Literacy Night

We are hosting a Literacy Night on Thursday, March 16th from 5:00-6:30 PM. The event will allow children and their families to travel around the school as part of our "We're Wild About Reading" experience. The evening is supported by our staff, P.A.L.S., and our local GISD as part of our shared commitment to provide our children with experiences and opportunities to grow in their love of reading! We recognize there are numerous events taking place this time of year in our district, so the time frame for our Literacy Night will hopefully allow families to enjoy other opportunities that may be occurring that evening.

GISD Reading Tips

Set aside 20 minutes of reading time with your child daily. When you read every day with your child, it makes them better readers, expands vocabulary, and promotes a positive relationship between you and your child. Make sure they see you reading. It sets a great example!

Visit the library and check out books. Visits to a library expand your child’s world, opportunities, and interests for reading and models good habits and practices.

Talk with your children while on walks, in the grocery store, in restaurants, and wherever you go. Conversations build vocabulary, prior knowledge, and connections in the brain. Don’t let technology rob you of time talking with your children. If you allow children to watch TV, watch with them, ask questions, and engage them in talking about what they are watching.

Below are some additional online links to programs your children can access to support reading interests!

ABCya
Free and for pay options. Grade PreK - 5. Games to improve reading, numbers, letters, spelling, and language skills. Features some Spanish games.

Storyline Online

Hearing and Vision Screenings

An additional date for 2nd grade hearing screenings has been scheduled for Monday, March 20th by our local health department. Hearing and vision screening is part of Michigan law and supports early detection of a possible concern to increase a child's success in school. If a concern is found, parents are contacted by a member of the health department. We are also sharing a copy of the hearing and vision grade level screening schedule to support community awareness. Please contact your child's teacher or the office with any questions.

No School - Friday, March 24th

There is no school on Friday, March 24th to support professional development for our staff.

Attendance is Important

Please make sure your child is coming to school regularly. This leads to fewer gaps in learning, stronger relationships and routines. We do realize illnesses will occur and we appreciate everyone's efforts to keep each other healthy, which may require time at home. Please keep in contact with your child's teacher and our office when this occurs. Thank you!

Personal Wellness Matters

As part of creating a healthy mind and body, we are encouraging each other to do things that will benefit our entire well-being. Recognizing how certain foods and exercise impact our physical and emotional wellness are important factors we can learn to utilize to meet this end. Choosing healthier snacks can be a great place to start and helps us build better eating habits. Frozen yogurt, grapes, vegetables and dip, raisins, and trail mixes are SOME examples that have been recommended as alternatives to everything else Mr. Strickert prefers to snack upon :) Yes, Mr. Strickert is still learning as he makes his lunch for school, but he recognizes the importance of eating well-rounded meals and snacks that include vegetables!

We also encourage movement, such as stretching, walking, running, and climbing during recess, PE, and certain classroom activities. Each of these are good for the body and mind as we learn more about ourselves and develop friendships along the way.

Dress for the Weather

Freezing temperatures, snow, then sunny skies and 50 degree temperatures. It's looking like the weather is going to be all over the place in the coming week, so please make sure your child is prepared for the elements. Hats, gloves, warm coats, snow pants, and boots are all essential regardless of the changing weather patterns. It's always easier to have clothing you don't need for recess then it is to go outside wishing you had another layer of protection from the elements. If you are in need of winter gear, please contact the office. We do have some donated items on hand.

Popcorn Updates

Popcorn is for sale twice a month on Fridays and costs just a quarter a bag. Our wonderful parent volunteers make some of the best popcorn in Genesee County and the proceeds are donated back to a different classroom each week to help support classroom needs. Thank you everyone for your support and enjoy that delicious popcorn!

P.A.L.S. Spring Fundraiser

P.A.L.S. is partnering with Foertmeyer & Sons Greenhouse Company as part of a spring fundraiser at Hyatt. Foertmeyer and Sons has over 250,000 plants grown in their greenhouse each year, so freshness, quality, and variety are certainly a plus! The fundraiser will run from March 2nd through March 16th. The orders are delivered to Hyatt and will be ready for pickup at a date in May. Please look for more information to come home with your child. You may also visit their online store at www.fundraisieit.org or click on the QR code to register and order as well. The monies raised will support additional radios for staff communication and security at Hyatt. Thank you!

SOAR Expectations

We are continuing to SOAR at Hyatt as part of our district mission to support a positive culture in our schools! Our goal is to teach desirable behaviors that will serve our children well everywhere in our community and beyond! Throughout their day we focus on Staying Safe, Offering Kindness, Acting Responsibly, and showing Respect. The children are recognized individually with SOAR tickets and weekly through grade level drawings with donated prizes from our supportive P.A.L.S group, McDonalds, and Mancinos. This is a community commitment and something we are proud to support.

Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering at the school, please contact your child’s teacher. We often are looking for an extra set of hands both in and out of the classroom. All volunteers are required to complete a background check before they can be approved to volunteer in the school. Please let us know if you are interested! Thank you!
