Letter from the 'Editor'
Happy New Year LSSPs!
New Years is always a funny holiday for educators, because it is a new start and a half way marker.
Personally, NYE was very chill occasion for me (which included going to bed at what I call parent-midnight AKA 10:15). For me, this break and time off turned out to be an excellent blend of down time and being productive (getting random half-finished home improvement projects completed). I hope your time away from the schools was filled with a good combination of up and down time. =)

Good Reading in January
'Email apnea' is a phenomenon where people unconsciously hold their breath or drop into shallow breathing when they're responding to email or texting. It can be subtle, and it's not always for long, but it's enough to disrupt our regular flow of oxygen and unwittingly kick our stress response into gear. Learn more in the article above.
The Science of Math is a movement focused on using objective evidence about how students learn math in order to make educational decisions and to inform policy and practice. For more information, check out this wonderful Communique article from Dr. Amanda VanDerHayden et al on the subject (NASP membership required).

Supporting Research - TTU Study Opportunity
My name is Anabel Vega Meyer, and I am a doctoral candidate at Texas Tech University working with Dr. Patricia Hawley. We are conducting a study related to practicing school psychologists, their career self-efficacy, experiences related to racial stressors, and coping. We are also interested in future intentions of school psychologists currently in the field. Your input will help potentially identify stressors and barriers school psychologists currently face. Participation eligibility includes school psychologists in the United States who are currently practicing independently in the schools.
If you meet the criteria, please consider completing the survey in the link below. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Your participation is completely voluntary. You can skip any questions you are not comfortable with and stop at any point. There are no foreseeable risks to your participation. To protect your confidentiality, your name and any other identifying information will not be collected. Your e-mail address will not be collected. Your responses will be completely anonymous and confidential.

More Research - The University of British Columbia
The purpose of the study is to look at the ability to efficiently and accurately screen students who may need additional behavioral, social, or emotional support in schools has gained more attention. The goal of the current research project is to examine how acceptable parents, teachers, school administrators, and school psychologists are of certain forms of social, emotional, and behavioral universal screeners- specifically screeners related to behavioral/mental health, social and emotional learning (SEL) skills, and trauma/adverse childhood events. By exploring these issues, it is hoped that we can provide information to schools about how key stakeholders view these screenings.

This month: The Long Game: How to be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short Term World by Dorie Clark.
I certainly fancy myself as a long term thinker, but with all of the demands on my brain and time, that isn't always the easiest thing to do. Dorie Clark's book was a nice reminder and refresher on the topic. From deciding what to be bad at to the No Asks for a Year rule, there were a number of fun strategies and tips for being able to keep the long-term in mind within your current flow.
