💻 New Jersey Student Learning Assessment
April 2026
Dear Parent/Guardian,
This spring, your child will participate in New Jersey’s statewide assessments. These state-required tests provide one important way to understand how well students are learning grade‑level skills in English, math, and science.
Depending on their grade level, your child may participate in one or more of the following tests:
All of New Jersey’s statewide assessments are based on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), which describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. While the state test may look a little different this year, it still measures whether students are learning skills and knowledge expected for their grade.
Grades 3rd & 4th: NJSLA-A ELA and Mathematics May 11 through May 15, 2026
Purpose of Statewide Assessments
Students take different kinds of tests during the school year, and each type of test serves a different purpose. New Jersey’s statewide assessments are one important way to show families and communities how well students, schools, and districts are meeting the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, which describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
These results provide schools with valuable insight into students’ progress and help educators refine instruction when needed to strengthen learning. They allow teachers and school leaders to see how students grow from year to year, and to ensure all students have access to strong, grade‑level instruction. This information also helps districts confirm their curriculum matches the state standards. Overall, statewide tests give families and schools an understanding of how students are growing and where support may be needed so every child can succeed.
Preparing for the Assessments
We ask for your assistance in getting your children to school on time, with their charged Chromebooks, a set of wired headphones, well-rested, and having eaten a nutritious breakfast. We cannot allow students to enter the testing rooms once testing has begun. Failure to report to school on time will result in scheduling your child for makeup testing. In addition, if you need to schedule appointments (e.g., doctor/dentist) for your child, we kindly ask you to do so around the testing schedule. For more information, visit the NJDOE Assessment Website. https://www.nj.gov/education/assessment/adaptive/
Sincerely,
Mrs. Alicia Rissmiller
📝 Important: NJSLA Testing at Roosevelt School
Our 3rd and 4th Graders will be taking the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) the week of May 11th through May 15th. Attendance during this week is very important, so please ensure your child arrives at school on time!
Testing can be a stressful time, but we want our students to "Donut Stress" and remember to be kind to their minds. You can help your child prepare for a successful week by following these reminders:
Rest & Recharge: Ensure they get a good night's sleep.
Fuel Up: Provide a healthy breakfast each morning OR take advantage of our breakfast options at school - Breakfast starts at 8:25!
Tech Check: Students must bring their Chromebook fully charged, along with their charger. If your child is experiencing any issues with their device or charger, please submit a technology request as soon as possible - https://www.manvilleschools.org/departments/technology
Audio: Please send your child with a pair of wired headphones.
We encourage students to practice mindful coping skills like deep breathing and positive affirmations. We’ve got this!
🚧 Water Line Replacement Project: N. 13th Avenue - UPDATE
__________________________________________________________________
A water line replacement project is scheduled to begin on North 13th Avenue (between Brooks Blvd and Dukes Pkwy) on or about Monday, March 16, 2026. The project is expected to last 6 to 8 weeks.
How this affects our school community:
Daytime Traffic & Detours: Phase 1 begins March 16. During the day, North 13th Ave will be closed between Dukes Pkwy and Bleecher St. All traffic will be diverted to North 10th Ave.
Minimizing School Disruption: To keep our learning environment quiet and safe, any work that significantly impacts the school property will be limited to nighttime hours and scheduled school breaks.
Drop-off & Pick-up: If you access ABIS from the North, you must use North 10th Ave and Bleecher St to reach the school.
Please allow extra travel time and drive safely through the detour zones.
🌷 4th Grade Spring Concert
The fourth-grade class has been working very hard for the Spring Concert! Our theme this year is "Songs of Home and Heart". Our repertoire revolves around themes of home, love, growth, and connection. Here are a few things that I need to share with parents in order to have a very successful concert. The 4th Grade Spring concert is:
When: Wednesday, May 6th, 2026 at 6:30pm
Where: Manville High School Auditorium
Dress Code: Solid white top, Black bottoms, closed-toe shoes!
- Girls: Please wear appropriate bottoms. This can be solid black slacks, black jeans, skirt with tights, or a solid color white or black dress.
- Boys: Please wear a collared or button-down white shirt. Appropriate bottom wear can be black slacks, solid black jeans, or khaki pants.
- Please no ripped jeans, leggings, or T-shirts with pictures or wording. Please have long hair pulled back/up so it is not blocking the face. Students need to be able to see the music teacher and audience clearly.
*Please note ALL students must be signed in AND out by a parent/guardian.
If you have any questions, please email nmaldonado-gorsak@manvillesd.org. I look forward to seeing you all there!

🎒 Attendance Matters
Finishing the Year Strong!
As we move into the final months of the school year, it can be tempting to let routines slide—but this is actually the most critical time for consistent attendance! Staying on track now ensures our students are fully prepared for end-of-year milestones and their transition to the next grade.
The Testing Edge: With NJSLA testing scheduled for May 11th–15th, being in class every day right now is vital. Regular attendance allows students to participate in essential review activities and build the confidence they need to do their best.
Routine & Reliability: Consistent attendance helps students stay connected to their peers and keeps their learning momentum high. Every lesson builds on the last, and being here in person makes all the difference.
Every Minute Counts:
- 8:25 AM: Doors open for breakfast.
8:35 AM: Regular arrival begins.
