What's Happening at AES
Preschool
First Friends 1
We had an exciting visit with Kara from the Harris Center. She brought WORMS! We learned about what worms do all year round. We got to observe worms up close and touch them! We’ll be learning more this spring about how worms help plants grow.
First Friends 2
What a busy week we have had. We finished our unit on how Primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) can be used to make secondary colors (purple, green, and orange). Book Read to guide our discovery with mixing colors was Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll.
Kara from the Harris Center also came in to teach the class about worms. The students were very excited to gain information and touch/hold a variety of sizes of worms. The worms even had a race.
Kindergarten
KindergartenWhat an exciting week we had learning about and seeing the solar eclipse! We turned this once in a lifetime opportunity into several great learning experiences. We read books, watched videos, made models of what happens during an eclipse, created safety face shields, and even had an eclipse snack- moon pies and Capri sun! It was such a fun way to incorporate real life into our learning, that’s what it’s all about!
Grade 1
Grade 3
Third graders had a great time learning about the solar eclipse and had an even better time watching it together from Shea Field. Once we learned what a solar eclipse was, students asked lots of questions that we spent time answering by watching videos and researching online. We’ve also been working hard in math! We’ve been learning about fractions and how to show them on a number line. Students have made number lines and divided them into fractions on their desks, on the floor with string, and on the smartboard. Math is always lots of fun!
Crazy 8s
This week students in Crazy 8’s played some darts! Students learned how to use addition and multiplication to score points on a dart board. We also played some “random” rounds of darts with wacky rules like throw with your eyes closed, spin around before you throw, and throw with your non-dominant hand! Students had a blast! Can you believe next week is the last week for Crazy 8’s??
Library
Wellness
In Wellness this week, we took a ride around the earth for the solar eclipse, with our homemade scooter rockets. We also worked on balancing on the Lolo Balls. We had so much fun! Just a quick reminder - Please remember to send your child with a pair of sneakers everyday, so they can be ready for Wellness.
Grade 4
MuzArt
This week in Muzart students worked on collaboration through group practice. Kindergarten learned a song to go with the drums and Second grade did their first ever sound story: where a story is read and instruments are played for certain words.
Pictured is some first graders from Mrs. Hartshorne's class and their wiggly snake bookmarks!
School Counselor Corner
In classroom counseling lessons this week Kindergarten students continued to learn about bullying, focusing on reporting and refusing bullying. First graders reviewed self-regulation skills including some calming breathing practices. They listened to a story, Charlotte and the Quiet Place by Deborah Sosin. They also experienced a very brief but relaxing “brain vacation.” Second, third and fourth graders continued to focus on the world of work, composing questions to ask when playing “what’s my line” and learning about some features of particular careers, such as airline pilot, veterinarian, architect, solar panel engineer, marine biologist, professional snowboarder and wildlife photographer.
