Read Across America Week - March 3rd-7th (Next Week)
Principal's Message
Hello Lincoln Community,
An Amazing Week! We definitely made the most of our full five-days. Topped off with a Friday all-school assembly, this week included Art and Literacy Night, dancing by our Danza Folklorica group, singing by our Lincoln choir, a visit by the local Garbage & Recycling company, plus everything else that we have going on in our regular learning week. With the warming weather, exciting events, and bus-driver appreciation, the enthusiasm was at an all-time high and the energy was indeed contagious!
Art & Literacy Night: We hosted an Art & Literacy Night on Wednesday and had nearly 400 people attend. The evening included our library full of various literacy games, a book giveaway, and art stations in the cafeteria. Additionally, our Lincoln Choir sang three songs and Danza Folklorico danced two songs in front of a packed house in the gym. Thank you for everyone who was able to attend, and if you missed it, please see the pictures included in this Newsletter.
Assembly and Bus Driver Appreciation: Today we filled our gym with our whole school for the February PBIS Assembly. At the assembly we honored students who won SWIM Awards, did Staff Shoutouts, recognized students with perfect attendance, and we all danced together to the Cha Cha Slide. Our Danza Folklorica performed in front of their peers. Additionally, we invited all of our bus drivers to join us so we could recognize them as part of Bus Driver Appreciation. The Appreciations included cards and signs that each class had made for the various drivers. What Excitement!
Read Across America Week: Next week, we'll join schools across the nation in celebrating Read Across America week. Each day of the week has a specific theme and it provides a fun way for our Lincoln community to celebrate reading together. Please see the flyer at the beginning of this Newsletter for details on this, and so you can plan ahead for next week.
Questions: As always, please feel free to send your questions or feedback to us at teresa.alfaro@woodburnsd.org or pmcdougal@woodburnsd.org.

Pedestrian Safety Tips When Coming To School and Going Home
Multiple times each year we instruct and remind our students about safety on buses and during the arrival and dismissal process. We also stress the importance of being careful and safe when traveling to and from school and any time when we're out in the community. Here are some of the important points to keep in mind.
- Walking: Using identified walking paths, obeying all traffic laws/signals, being aware of surroundings, wearing clothes that make you easily seen by cars, share your walking path with your parents so they know, keep eyes and ears open.
- Biking: Making sure bike is correctly functioning as intended (brakes, reflectors, etc.), make sure you have proper safety gear, obey all traffic laws/signals, be aware of your surroundings, wear clothes that make you easily visible, keep eyes and ears open, use lighting at night, share your path with your parents so they know.
- Rail Safety: Only cross at designated areas, keep eyes and ears open, be aware of your surroundings, follow all traffic laws/signals.
When Picking Up Your Student(s)
Please follow our designated traffic patterns. Here are some guidelines:
- Unless you're in an actual parking spot, be sure to stay in your vehicle.
- Similar to at an airport, we can't have unattended vehicles in the driving lanes (this includes the French Prairie MS parking lot too).
- Follow staff directions.
- Pull up to the forward-most pick up spot.
- Take care to always be vigilant when pulling out after picking up your student.

Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance
This year we are continuing to pay close attention to ensuring that children are present at school regularly, because Every Day Matters.
Setting High Goals: We're focusing on attendance because last year 58% of our students were regular attenders (attended more than 90% of the days) and 42% were chronically absent (attended less than 90% of the days). The 58% was an improvement from the previous year when we had 51% of our students who were regular attenders. For the current school year our school leadership has set the goal to improve from 58% up to 70%. WE CAN DO IT!
So Important: There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and student success in school. Please see the visual below for more information.
