Cougar Chronicle
October Weekly Update ~ October 16, 2026
A note from Mr. Lee
I want to take a moment to thank all of our Carter families who took the time to participate in Parent Teacher Conferences this week. Whether you joined us in person on Wednesday or virtually on Thursday, your involvement and commitment to your child's education make a tremendous difference. It was great seeing so many families back in our building, having meaningful conversations, and working together to support our students. Strong schools are built on strong partnerships between home and school, and we are fortunate to have such a supportive Carter community!
As we look ahead, it's hard to believe that we are just two weeks away from the end of our first card marking on Friday, October 30th! This is a great time to sit down with your child, check PowerSchool, review missing assignments, and have conversations about their progress. At this point in the school year, students should be settling into routines and taking greater ownership of their learning. One question I encourage you to ask is, "What are you learning in class, and how do you know if you're successful?" This connects directly to our building's focus of moving from "I Can" to "I Own," helping students understand not just what they're learning, but why it matters.
There is still time to finish this first card marking strong! Encourage your child to stay organized, communicate with teachers, complete assignments, and most importantly, be at school every day.
Every Day Counts!
Mr. Lee
Special Remarks from Mr. Syswerda
It was great to see everyone at Parent-Teacher conferences. Thank you for your help in making this event an overwhelming success. Our fall sports seasons are wrapping up over the next several weeks. Boys' basketball tryouts will begin in November and Girls' basketball tryouts will take place in January. If you have not yet submitted your child's physical and other information through Final Forms, but they intend to tryout, make sure you submit their documents as soon as possible.
SCHOOL ID'S
Student ID cards are required to be worn at all times while at school.
If a student loses their ID, a replacement can be purchased for $5. Lanyards are available for $2 each, and Cougar Cards can be replaced for $1.
- Students who need a new ID or lanyard can visit the Counseling Office.
- Students who need a new Cougar Card can visit the Front Office.
Please note that student IDs are required for all sporting events and special activities, both during and after school.
Thank you for helping ensure students have their ID with them at all times throughout the school year.
Important Reminder Regarding Messages to Students
We have recently experienced an influx of parent phone calls requesting that the office deliver messages to students in their classrooms. While we understand that plans can occasionally change, the majority of these requests are coming at the end of the school day. This can make it difficult for our secretaries to get messages to classrooms while also managing dismissal.
We ask that families make arrangements with their students regarding how they will be getting home before they arrive at school each day.
If you need to get a message to your student on an emergency basis, please make every effort to call the school office as early as possible so we have enough time to deliver the message.
Last-minute messages can be especially difficult to deliver during dismissal, when office staff and teachers are busy assisting students with buses, lockers, and other dismissal procedures.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together to keep dismissal running smoothly and safely.
FROM THE KITCHEN
Next week Carter Middle School Kitchen will feature two special side dishes for students to enjoy!
On Monday, October 19, we will be serving Tomato, Cucumber Salad with Feta. On Friday, October 23, students can enjoy a delicious Apple Crisp or Blueberry Crisp.
In addition to these special offerings, we provide a variety of fruits and vegetables every day to give students plenty of delicious options.
Please encourage your child to stop by the cafeteria serving line and enjoy a school lunch with us. We look forward to serving your student.
HEALTH CLASS
Mrs. Gurney’s Health class is learning that I can identify the causes of stress, and I can use healthy ways to manage stress. They had the opportunity to make stress balls, play games that were very stressful like operation, Jenga, and come on six. They also made stress monsters with playdough and colored calming pictures. At the end of class, they reflected on how they used healthy ways to manage their stress and how they identified when they felt stressed.
