.Magnet School Window and Application Process for 2024-25 School Year

Vista Unified is excited to offer magnet school experiences to students. We are fully committed to ensuring that all families have an equitable opportunity to participate in the application process. Magnet schools are schools of choice that operate within existing public school systems and offer specialized courses or curricula. In Vista Unified, we have five magnet schools serving elementary, middle, and high school students:

  • Casita Center for Science, Technology & Math (Grades K - 5)

  • Vista Academy of Visual & Performing Arts (Grades K - 5)

  • Vista Magnet Middle School (Grades 6 - 8)

  • Vista Innovation & Design Academy (VIDA) (Grades 6 - 8)

  • Mission Vista High School (Grades 9 - 12)

For those families interested in one of our middle or high school options, the window to apply is January 10, 2024 to February 23, 2024. It is important to note that the window for the middle and high school application submission is shorter than elementary because the master schedule development must be completed by spring in order for all course selections to be prepared for the new school year. Applications for the magnet programs may be accessed on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 10, 2024.

The elementary school application window has been extended to include the kindergarten registration time frame. The extension of the elementary magnet school application window will provide families with more time to learn about and participate in the application process. For families interested in one of our elementary magnet schools, the window to apply is January 10, 2024 to March 22, 2024. Applications for elementary magnet programs may be accessed on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 10, 2024.

Because space is limited at each school, Vista Unified strives to provide a clear, fair, and balanced admissions process using a lottery system. This year, two lotteries will take place as noted below:

  • March 8, 2024 for Vista Magnet Middle School, Vista Innovation & Design Academy, and Mission Vista High School

  • April 12, 2024 for Casita Center for Science, Technology, and Math and Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts

On January 9th, all staff will be participating in a full day of professional learning aligned to helping each school reach the Board Goals and implement our Framework for the Future, including a focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Welcoming Students to a New Year 2024 Welcoming Students to a New Year 2024

We hope that all students take advantage of the winter break to recharge and rejuvenate, ready to return energized to dive into the exciting challenges and learning experiences that lie ahead in the New Year. Take time to reflect on what went well in the first months of the school year and identify what steps were taken to lead to those successes. While keeping the positives in mind, consider what changes you’d like to make to improve in the second segment of the school year. For example, maybe you’ve done a great job getting to bed early to get to school on time and you’d like to next dedicate a specific time of day to get assignments completed to have more consistency in getting work completed. Think about what help you might need to stay focused on your new growth goals. Is there a teacher or your school counselor that you’d like to reach out to for help? The new year is a great time to look back and make a plan to move forward, continuously improving. Let’s make 2024 a year of growth, collaboration and achievement together!

Supports During the Holidays Supports During the Holidays

Children of all ages, but especially those with anxiety or difficulty processing their feelings, may require some extra support over the holidays. When we think of all the expectations that can come with the holiday season, it’s no wonder that children, along with parents, may feel some pretty big emotions during this time of year. Our Vista Unified Social/Emotional Support Team has created a Student Wellness Hub where families can connect with resources and wellness ideas to help ease the expectations surrounding the holiday season.

School Consolidation School Consolidation

In June 2023 we released the somber news that after careful consideration the School Board had voted to consolidate (close) Beaumont Elementary School and Rancho Minerva Middle School. This decision does not diminish the incredible value and joy both of these schools have provided to the community over many years of services. The official date selected for the closure is June 30, 2024. Since this decision, the School Board has engaged in a series of discussions and decisions related to the school closure process that include school boundaries, magnet school priority considerations, access to transportation, and school transfer procedures. During the School Board meeting on December 12, 2023, the board voted to adopt a new set of school boundaries that will have implications for those students of Beaumont Elementary School and Rancho Minerva Middle School. In addition, recent decisions by the School Board have included temporary modifications to the Magnet School application process for these students. You can keep updated on this complex and ongoing process on our School Consolidation webpage which can be accessed at: www.vistausd.org/osc/schoolconsolidation.

California’s Fiscal Outlook Faces $68 Billion Deficit California’s Fiscal Outlook Faces $68 Billion Deficit

zoom_out_map

On December 7, the state’s nonpartisan Legislative Analyst Office (LAO) issued its annual Fiscal Outlook for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The release of the Fiscal Outlook was highly anticipated this year due to the delayed tax filing deadline, shifted from April 2023 to November 2023, and the curiosity surrounding tax collections for the 2022 calendar year. In this report, the LAO confirmed that California income tax collections were down by $26 billion for 2022-23. The Fiscal Outlook estimates a budget deficit of $68 billion over the three-year period from 2022-23 to 2024-25.

The report underscores the options available to the Legislature as they enter the 2024-25 budget negotiation cycle. These options include re-benching Proposition 98 funding levels (the primary source of K-12 funding) to align with lower education funding levels, withdrawing funds from the state’s rainy day budget reserves, and considering reductions in spending on programs or reallocating funds.

As we navigate these fiscal challenges, School Districts are eagerly awaiting the release of the Governor's Proposed Budget on January 10th. This highly anticipated event will offer the first insights into the Governor's strategies for addressing the budget deficit, with a particular focus on education. The unveiling of this budget will provide valuable information on proposed measures and allocations, crucial for steering our education system through the challenges ahead.

Digital Citizenship Advisory Digital Citizenship Advisory

We are working diligently across the district to provide education and support to students and staff related to challenges and dangers that arise from the internet and email. As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring students’ safety, mental health, and wellbeing, we are proud to announce we have partnered with Linewize, a leading provider of online student safety and wellbeing technology when the students are using a district chromebook device.

Linewize Monitor is the most advanced student threat detection tool in K-12. As digital learning in the classroom evolves, the need to protect children online is a key safety concern for our staff.

By adopting the Linewize’s safety solution, we can:

  • Better maintain our duty of care by ensuring the students are safe online

  • Receive automatic alerts when suspicious online activity is detected

  • Notify parents when students attempt to or successfully access inappropriate or harmful content

  • Download student behavioral and wellbeing reports

  • Pinpoint students who may need mental health support and resources

  • Identify students whose online behaviors suggest they are at-risk (self-harm, bullying, violence, etc)

  • Quickly mediate and intervene when suspicious activity is flagged

How does it work?

Linewize Monitor uses a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and specially trained human moderators to flag when a student's online behavior suggests they are in harm's way or becoming vulnerable.

Important Note: This monitoring only occurs when the students are using a district supplied chromebook. It does not extend to students’ personal phones or devices.

Suspected low level concerns are flagged for school officials to evaluate. Suspected higher level concerns, including a risk to student health or life, are reviewed by a human moderator who will contact the school directly, if deemed genuine. This happens within minutes of the risk occurring.

When AI detects a risk, a screenshot is taken. Low risks are stored in a portal for school safety teams to review and discount as a false alarm as appropriate. More serious risks, including to student health or life are sent to a human moderator for analysis and escalation to our school district's Director of Risk Management and Safety, Carol Crandall, who may be in contact in case of emergency.

What Linewize Monitor doesn’t do:

  • View, share, or collect personal student data

  • Have access to parental contact information

  • Access video cameras on student devices

  • Monitor personal devices that are not used in classrooms (such as cell phones)

  • Contact parent(s)/guardian(s) directly

While Linewize Monitors acts as a threat detection tool, we encourage parents to talk to their children about good digital citizenship and to report any potential cyberbullying or other sensitive issues to your school administrators .
