News and Happenings at Cohasset High School

Dear Families,
There is a documentary on ESPN called The Redeem Team that chronicles the return to greatness of USA Men's basketball after a disappointing bronze medals in both the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 FIBA World Championships. The team was led by superstars Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul and a new head coach, Mike Krzyzewski.
In the documentary, Krzyzewski begins the first team meeting unexpectedly.
“So the meeting comes, and the very first thing I say to them, I say, ‘I want you guys to know I want you to bring your egos. I don’t believe in ‘leave your egos at the door.’ Bring your egos in. But I need you to put them under one umbrella.”
“And then I said, ‘I want you to know that you are not playing for the United States.’ And we always had a picture of the gold medal. And I stopped, and they were like, ‘Where’s the pro coach? Like, this guy’s an idiot,'” the coach narrated.
“And I looked at them, and I pointed to each one of them. I said, ‘We won’t win that unless you are United States Basketball. You have to own it. And you have to not just hear and see what we’re doing, you have to feel what we’re doing, and we have to share common ground,'” he added.
This is very different from a coach telling his players to check their egos. Their confidence is what made them great in the first place, and to leave that behind would be leaving behind a piece of who they were. Rather, he asked them to double down on that gift, but to use it not just to represent USA basketball, but to become USA basketball. One unit, fully functioning.
If you were at the football game last night you could almost imagine that our players heard that same message. 11 Skippers, 1 Ship.
About five weeks ago I was talking at the school vestibule with Sarah McSweeney, and we both commented that there was something special about this team. They competed, but not with each other. They each had roles, and they pushed each other to be the best at those roles. When Amesbury onside kicked late in the game yesterday, recovered by Max Ellinger. One of the people standing next to me made the remark, "Oh man. He talked about this all week. If he has to make one big play, he said it would be an onside kick."
That kind of focus, the ability to become one thing with many parts -- each person providing a role and doing it with their whole selves. That's a championship organization. So many teachers have remarked at how matured this team has become both individually and as a team over the past year, and it sets a remarkable example of how an organization -- whether it's a team, or a school, or a company -- can optimally perform.
We are fortunate that they represented Cohasset so well, as did all of our fall teams. Roll Skips!
Sincerely,
Brian T. Scott
