Superintendent's Memo Superintendent's Memo

Welcome Back BTPS!

It is so good to be back! I left our Opening Day feeling incredibly grateful for the people who make up BTPS and excited about the year ahead. Having everyone together was such a great reminder of what Big Opportunities. Small Community Feel. really means. There is something very special about working in rural public education. We are one division spread across many communities, and while each of our schools has its own personality, traditions and community connections, we are all working toward the same thing: creating great opportunities for our students and making sure they know they belong.

Since then, I’ve had a chance to stop in at the Support Staff Conference and Colony Staff Meeting, and I also completed the van run to each of our community schools. I loved it! Driving across our division, stopping in our communities, walking through schools, and saying hello to staff and students was a wonderful way to start the year. It reminded me that one of the greatest strengths of rural education is connection. We know our students, we know our families and communities, and we know one another. Those relationships allow us to create opportunities for kids that are personal, meaningful and uniquely suited to the communities we serve.

I am so excited for this year and for what we can accomplish together. There will be busy days and challenges, but there will also be great learning, new ideas, laughter, celebrations and countless moments that remind us why this work matters. I hope we continue to celebrate what it means to be part of rural public education, to think big while holding on to the relationships and sense of community that make BTPS special. Most importantly, let’s continue to look out for one another and remember that the highly effective team in our mission is all of us. It really is great to be back!

Be well,

Michelle

At our BTPS Learning Day, Ariel Haubrich shared a message about the strengths of rural education and the people, relationships and sense of belonging that make our schools and communities feel like home. Throughout the year, Ariel’s Corner will bring us little reminders from that message and encourage us to keep those ideas with us in the work we do each day.

Small towns, big hearts!

As we begin a new school year…one that will be filled with hope and with hard work, remember to bring your head, and your heart; your hands and your health. Remember to help each other. These are our tools, as we build a home for our students and ourselves. A place of stability and connection, of learning and growing, of grit and of grace.

Have an amazing year everyone!

Reading, Give it a Shot! is a literacy program available for students from grade 1-9 that aims to boost classroom literacy rates by rewarding students for reading. In partnership with local businesses, this program links literacy in a child's most formative years to the reward of having the opportunity to attend a live hockey game at Rogers Place.

Registering for Reading, Give it a Shot is easy! All students have to do is start reading. Once every student in a classroom completes their required reading in one month’s time, the teacher can submit an entry form online for their chance to win tickets to an Oilers or Oil Kings game! September 8 is International Literacy Day

Literacy is at the heart of learning. It helps students build confidence, explore new ideas, communicate, think critically and develop skills that support them throughout their lives. Across Buffalo Trail Public Schools, literacy is part of learning every day, from our youngest learners beginning their reading journey to students continuing to build and strengthen their skills.

On September 8, we join communities around the world in recognizing the importance of literacy and the opportunities it creates for learners of all ages. Since 1967, UNESCO has marked this day as a reminder that literacy is more than a skill, it’s a foundation for opportunity and growth.
