Substance Use Awareness
This past Saturday, parents and guardians gathered for our Parent University session titled "Vaping Me Crazy," which took place at Proviso East. The event offered valuable insights into teenage substance use, focusing on vaping, tobacco, and marijuana. Hosted in collaboration with Loyola School-Based Health Center, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, and Liv4Lali, the workshop provided parents with tools to better understand and address these important issues.
Key Highlights:
Understanding Teen Substance Use
The session examined the reasons why teenagers turn to substances, highlighting the increasing role of mental health issues compared to earlier factors, such as infectious diseases in the 1900s and chronic illnesses in the 2000s. The discussion addressed common misconceptions about experimentation and emphasized the risks associated with early substance use, including victimization, injury, and addiction.
Parent Engagement Strategies
This workshop emphasized the importance of open communication, household expectations, and parental behavior management techniques. Parents and guardians were encouraged to:
- Be positive role models
- Establish clear consequences for disobeying
- Foster family cohesion be reinforcing shared values and rituals
Building Communication Skills
Reflective listening emerged as a critical tool for parents to engage their teens effectively. By reflecting on their children's statements, parents can open dialogue on difficult topics, such as substance use, while avoiding defensive reactions. Parents were urged to avoid a question-answer trap and instead summarize or clarify their teen's thoughts.
A Call To Action
The session concluded with a commitment to family strength and cohesion to navigate the challenges of modern parenting. We are grateful to all the families who joined us in building a healthier future for our students.
Stay tuned for the next Parent University workshop! Together, we can empower our children to make informed, positive choices.

Getting Students Into The Spirit Of Giving
The holiday season is the perfect time to foster a spirit of giving among students while creating meaningful memories that last well beyond the holiday season. Encouraging young people to give back—whether by volunteering at a local food pantry, organizing toy drives, or helping neighbors in need—instills a sense of gratitude, compassion, and community.
Volunteering as a family not only makes a greater impact but also strengthens bonds and creates lasting traditions. Working together to serve others helps children develop empathy, learn teamwork, and build a sense of accomplishment. It's also a wonderful way to explore new opportunities, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and form connections within your community.
For Proviso High School students, volunteering is an excellent way to earn community service hours, which is a graduation requirement and often beneficial for college applications. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about different organizations and gain valuable life skills.
Together, we can teach our students the joy of giving and create a ripple effect of positivity that extends throughout the year.

Why Community Service?
The number of high school students involved in community service programs has risen from 81,000 in 1984 to nearly 3 million in 1997 (National Service Clearinghouse). Community service programs are being implemented to help counteract the sense of isolation that many experts attribute to the growing amount of violence in schools. Most schools with community service learning cite strengthening relationships among students, the school, and the community as key reasons for doing community service. Community service has long been viewed as a possible means of improving education. John Dewey, an advocate of service learning, believed that students would learn more effectively and become better citizens if they engaged in service to the community.
