Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Thank you for all you do to support teachers across the regional!

Spring is in full bloom and the end of school year activities are in full swing! As you think about wrapping up the year and begin thinking about next year, we have included a few resources to help support you.

Our last huddle training session with Michelle Harris from the Instructional Coaching Group was a great conversation regarding directive coaching, instructional playbook strategies, and problems of practice. We also discussed the importance of wrapping up the year with your teachers, with a focus on successes and celebrations from the year. This coaching conversation should highlight their growth, as well as the growth of their students. Additionally, this wrap-up meeting can help support goal setting and coaching connections for next school year. Lastly, our huddle member Sarah Christy, Instructional Coach from the Morrow County School District shared some great resources with the group. These resources and our huddle video recording are linked below.

Summer reading is always something to look forward to as summer break approaches! If you are interested in adding professional development books into your summer reading, we have included two great books to help support your growth as an instructional coach.

We are also looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday, May 17th at 9:30 am - 11:30 am for our last coaches huddle of the year. This huddle meeting will be hybrid: you can choose to join us at the Pendleton IMESD in the Juniper room or via zoom. Katie Smith, from the Core Collaborative will be facilitating virtually. She plans to discuss strategies for coaching the formative assessment process. We hope you can join us!

Warmest Regards,

Ayla, Beth, & Jennifer

Coaching Resources

The Coaching Habit - This book by Michael Bungay Stanier, takes a look at coaching from a different perspective. The author states that coaching is an essential skill for managers, but interestingly the advice from this book also applies to instructional coaching conversations. Jim Knight shared information from Michael's book in his 16-week course on instructional coaching and he features Michael as a guest on his podcast. Here are a few resources from Bungay Stanier and his company, Box of Crayons:

  • Book Summary Video
  • Book Website
  • Box of Crayons: My One Best Question Video Series
  • Jim Knight Podcast with Michael Bungay Stanier

This book is available on Audible and was a great listen!

Other Michael Bungay Stanier Books:

  • How to Work With (Almost) Anyone
  • The Advice Trap
  • Do More Great Work

Instructional Resource

This year we have learned more about John Hattie's research as we have explored the "impact teams" model with Katie Smith, Consultant from the Core Collaborative. Sharing instructional strategies that are rooted in John Hattie's research have proven to be best practices and can increase the speed of learning if they are within the zone of desired effects (.4 or higher).

Quote from the visible learning website regarding Hattie's new book: "In 2023, John Hattie returns to his ground-breaking Visible Learning Study, which was first published in 2008 and was based on a synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement. In the last 15 years the research base underlying the Visible Learning project has grown to more than 2,100 meta-analyses, drawn from more than 130,000 studies, and involved more than 400 million students from all around the world." Book Website

This book is definitely on our professional development reading list for the summer!
