LT Summer News
A quick catch-up before the year starts
School Starts in 5 Weeks!
At the half-way point of summer break, I truly hope you have settled into a slower routine and are making plans to hang out with your kids a bit before the school year starts. Some quick ideas for the summer:
- Go to a farmer's market together.
- Hit the Smithsonians! There are new exhibits at Air & Space, and the Galleries of Art are seriously amazing.
- The fountains are back on at Meridian Hill Park.
- What about a day trip to Sandy Point by the Bay Bridge?
- There are really cool parks in and near the city. Here is a list! I LOVED taking my kids to Clemyjontri (weird name. great park)
- Or, the Arboretum a great for a day trip in the city.
DC has so much to offer - that's why you live here! Did you know that our 3rd graders study DC history as their focus for social studies? It's one of the most special learning units.
Class Assignments
We know many students and families are excited to learn about class placements for next school year! Class assignments will be shared by August 13.
We appreciate the strong relationships our families have built with our staff—those connections are a big part of what makes Ludlow such a special community and we know that you will find even more connections with staff this coming year!
Because of the care and complexity involved in the process of creating learning groups, we are not able to consider requests for specific teachers. Even small changes can affect the balance of multiple classrooms. We appreciate your understanding and trust as we work to create the best possible learning environment for all students.
Progress Reports
Ludlow Taylor will send progress reports to caregivers of students who are in jeopardy of receiving a 2 or 1 on their report cards by the middle of the quarter. This important communication will let caregivers know if their student is not meeting academic requirements. Progress reports will also note the supports the school will put in place to support the student.
This will be a new practice this year and one we hope will lead to stronger connections between families and student learning during the day.
Supply Lists!
A new year means back to school shopping!
Please look through the lists so you can get great deals over the summer. That Target B2S sale - where markers are $0.50! - it can't be beat!
When purchasing wipes for classes, we must insist that only cleaning products that use hydrogen peroxide can be used at school. Ludlow Taylor is working with central office to pilot an all Green Cleaning system at school.
Here is a list of cleaners for your consideration:
PreK
Teachers will reach out to you closer to the start of the year. To start, your child will need:

We will periodically add additional items (e.g. to tissues and sanitizer), but we’ve found it easier to replenish those as the year goes on.
For individual supplies, we ask that each student bring in a water bottle clearly labeled with their name, grade and homeroom. Additionally, please send in a family picture to display in your child’s homeroom classroom. You can either send in a hard copy of the picture or email a soft copy to your child’s homeroom teacher. You may also choose to send in a pair of headphones for your child to leave at school in their homeroom classroom.

DCPS & LT Screen Time Policies
Important and Coming Soon
While we work through the impending DCPS screen time and technology policies, we are committed to ensuring our students have the tools and skills they need to be successful in school and beyond, that all students have equitable access to tools and skills, and that we do not contribute to the growing impacts of inappropriate screen use. Screen and technology use in schools has clearly grown and we want to ensure our policies are aligned with high leverage use to ensure our students can use technology productively and to achieve their learning goals.
We are still drafting LT's language and will seek staff and community input before we make policies final. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our thinking on this important issue thus far.
