January 19, 2026

I hope that everyone enjoyed the long weekend and had some fun out in the snow. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point in the school year! Megan McFarland will be returning to HSS on Tuesday as the assistant principal and we will have to say goodbye to Mr. Concannon, our interim AP. He's been a great help keeping the school running smoothly over the last five months.
On a different note, our January K-2nd grade Sing will be held on the 30th and we hope to see many of you there.

Upcoming After School Clubs!
We are going to be starting an after school Robotics Club in February that will run for six weeks. After that club ends, we will introduce our Math Design Challenge Club which will run for eight weeks. One club will be for our younger students and one for our older students. Details will follow in two weeks.
We also have plans to run an after school Lego Building Club and we are in the process of gathering legos in order to start this program. Please drop off any used legos that you no longer want. We are collecting them in the main office and as soon as we have a sufficient supply, we'll announce details for the club.

Mid Year DIBELS Reading Test Letters

Attendance Policy
This is a reminder of the importance of having your children attend school every day and on time. A student is marked tardy if they are more than 5 minutes late to school. Our morning meetings start by 8:10 in the classrooms and it is important that all students are here.
In New Hampshire, habitual truancy is defined by the Department of Education as ten half-days or five full days of unexcused absence. If your child is habitually truant we will be reaching out to set up a meeting.
The Lebanon Board considers the following to be excused absences:
- Illness, including mental illness
- Recovery from an accident
- Required court attendance
- Medical and dental appointments
- Death in the immediate family
- Observation or celebration of a religious holiday
- Such other good cause as may be acceptable to the Principal or permitted by law
Any absence that has not been excused for any of these reasons will be considered an unexcused absence.
I know that the mornings can be a struggle for some students, but we appreciate your effort to get your children to school and on time.

Winter Wellness Tips
Get Good Sleep - Age appropriate bedtimes that are consistent help everyone! Elementary school children should get 10 - 12 hours of sleep a night. Having bedtime routines that are consistent and predictive can help avoid bedtime battles! Try starting bedtime with a bubble bath, brush teeth, and then end with a bedtime story! Sometimes offering to have soft, relaxing music play while your child falls asleep can help with the transition as well.
Physical Activity - Getting outside in the winter can be challenging when the temperatures get really cold. If you are unable to get outside, try some indoor physical activities. Try this workout with your kids: Active Fun! 20 Min Indoor Kids Workout
Stay up to date on vaccines AND be sure to get your COVID and FLU vaccines . . . it is not too late.
Consider wearing a mask when around others, especially if someone is still coughing or sneezing a lot.
Remind kids how to cover coughs and sneezes:
Elmo's World News Special Report: Cover Your Cough and Sneeze Dance
Wear layers when outside. Students will go out to recess as long as the βreal feelβ temperature is over 10 degrees F. Sometimes children can get wet from slushy snow, so it is always a good idea to pack some extra pants and socks.
Stay hydrated . . . drinking warm or cold drinks during winter can help bodies stay well hydrated and healthy. Try different flavored teas with honey or make your own hot chocolate. Try this delicious recipe: https://baketivity.com/blogs/news/hot-chocolate-recipes-for-kids-5-easy-fun-winter-drinks?srsltid=AfmBOoq5SZDs9SPWlb23wwwd3DQp3ZQ0MoAM6LapThS6nyaKvzqgcIoo
Washing hands is really important! Using soap and water or hand sanitizer is appropriate.
Staying connected . . . find ways to connect with others during these long, cold, and dark winter months. Plan some playdates, find a library to visit, find a new sledding hill!
And remember . . . the first day of spring is March 20!! π»βοΈ
