JCMS UpdateAugust 13

Tomorrow is our Big Day! Tomorrow is our Big Day!

When in doubt...ask for help

JCMS teachers and staff will be throughout the building to provide assistance to those who need it.

We ask that parents do not accompany their children inside because we cannot properly sign everyone in, and we do not have enough parking. We promise to take good care of them. Important things to know -

The doors open for student arrival at 8:40am. Students may not enter the building early unless they are in the REAL program. Our teachers are not required to be her before 8:40am, so no one will be available to supervise the students.

Students are allowed to carry backpacks until lockers are assigned next week. Phones must be stored in the backpack until then.

6th grade
  • Report to your pod area upon arrival. (The pod name is in the "Homeroom" box on the student schedule.)
  • Teachers will then direct the students to the right room.
  • Students do not need their school supplies on the first day. Please wait until Thursday to bring them.

7th grade
  • Report to your 1st hour class upon arrival to pick up your schedule.
  • If you do not know your 1st hour, ask an adult for help.
  • Please make sure to have at least a folder, notebook and pencil. The teachers will review what supplies are needed on Thursday.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up

At the request of our neighbor businesses, please do not wait in their parking lots to drop off or pick up your children. You can be ticketed. You are welcome to wait on the side streets and have your students cross at the crossing guards.

Please only drop off or pick up your students using the car rider lane. The staff parking lot in front of the entrance and bus lane are not to be used for safety reasons.

Thank you!

Buses

Please use this link to look up your child's bus number and pick up time. Please look up both morning and afternoon because the bus is not always the same. Teachers will also review bus info before dismissal.

Middle and high schools do not use bus tags, so it is very important for the students to know what bus they ride. We will have plenty of adults outside to assist them.

Since this is the first day of school, buses could be late. However, please call the school if a bus not arrive at all @ 859-422-0036.

Car Riders

Enter through the car rider lane.

  • If going out bound Clays Mill toward Man O War, it is the first entrance.
  • If going in-bound Clays Mill toward downtown, it is the second entrance.

Students may not be dropped off in the staff parking lot. They would have to cross between buses which is a safety issue.

Walkers

If walkers have to cross Clays Mill to get to school, they need to use the crosswalk with the crossing guards. This includes students who are dropped off across the street.

Students will bring home a folder tomorrow that contains some forms that need to be completed. Students will bring home a folder tomorrow that contains some forms that need to be completed.

Absence Excuses and Letters

Students have 3 days to turn in an absence excuse (parent note or doctor note) once they return to school from an absence. They are marked unexcused until that note has been turned in, and Ms. Cowan updates excuses daily. FCPS sends an auto-generated letter with my name on it when a student hits 3, 6 and 10 unexcused absences or tardies warning of the potential of truancy.

More times than not, students have the notes in their backpacks and never turned them in, but Ms. Cowan cannot change the absence reason once the month is complete and closed out in Infinite Campus. Please reinforce to your students to turn notes in to the front office when they arrive in the mornings. We can also accept emails from the email account that's listed in Infinite Campus or they can be faxed.

Thank you,

Jennifer Kendall

Electronics Policy

  • All cell phones and wireless earbuds/headphones must be placed in the student lockers upon arrival to school.

  • Phones out and in student possession will be confiscated or the remainder of the school day. Students may pick up phones from the front office during dismissal.

  • If administration has to be called due to refusal to turn in a phone, the student will automatically be assigned to one day or RESET or equivalent.

  • 2nd+ offenses: Parent conference and other possible disciplinary action

*** Teachers may allow students to listen to music while they work as a reward, but all music must be played from the student’s Chromebook.

If you need to reach your child or send a message, please call the office. We will get a message to your child or have them call you. Phones are a HUGE distraction that we are trying to minimize.

Medications

Students are not allowed to carry medication at school. Please check all medications in with our nurse, Shawnda Combs. Schools are not allowed to give any over the counter medications to students this includes Tylenol and Advil.
