Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
We have made it to the last week of school and next week promises to be a wonderful conclusion to what has been a strong school year at NRMS.
This past week, I had the privilege of attending the 8th grade poetry readings at the Snow Library, here in Orleans. This event was an amazing showcase of our talented students. The string quartet performed and the poems moved the audience members to tears. Kudos to our students, the 8th grade ELA teachers, and the Snow Library for organizing this amazing event.
Last night was the 8th grade dinner dance and it was an enjoyable evening for the 8th grade class to begin their week of celebrations. The class was on a field trip today. Next week we will practice for the promotion ceremony on Tuesday here at the middle school and then the ceremony will take place on Wednesday evening at the high school.
As we approach the summer months, we encourage you to help our students do some digital detox. While our 6th and 7th graders will keep their Chromebooks over the summer, we can deactivate/lock them, if requested. We strongly encourage students to get outside and play in the summer months or read while inside on any rainy days instead of being on technology. Even if you decide to just take some tech-free weeks during the summer, that can help students reduce their screen time.
Our last week of school has students going on field trips and wrapping up the year. We will recognize our 6th and 7th grade scholars with the awards night on Monday. There is no school on Thursday June 19th for the Juneteenth holiday. We end the year with a half day of school on Friday June 20.
As we look ahead to next year, one theme we will be focused on is supporting our students to become the crew in their educational journey through middle school, not just a passenger. This means taking more ownership for their learning, tracking their own progress, setting goals, and crafting plans to reach those goals. Together we can help students be set up for success in high school and beyond. We will help students become strong communicators, problem solvers, creative thinkers, global citizens, self-directed learners, and collaborators. These are the aspirations for all students and make up the profile of a graduate from Nauset. The middle school years are foundational for this work.
Thanks again for a wonderful school year. It takes a village to support our students. Hats off to our community for the work we collectively do to support our students.
Peter Cohen, Ed.D.
