ELD Department Overview

The English Language Development department services learners whose first language is not English. Guardians complete a home language survey to indicate the language spoken in the home. If another language is indicated on the home survey, learners are given an online screener to determine if services are needed. Students that come to the middle school with an English Language Learner, ELL, designation will continue to receive services.

Services may include direct instruction during the I/E block, classroom support during Baron time and co-teaching in an ELA class in 6th grade. The English Language Development facilitator will be in contact with core classroom facilitators and parents to meet the needs of each ELL learner.

Learners usually progress through the ELD program in about 3-5 years. Each year learners will take the WIDA Access Assessment to determine their language proficiency. Results are shared with facilitators and guardians. The results indicate a learner's language proficiency and helps to determine is a learner should continue services or be exited from the program. Once exited from the program, the ELD facilitator will monitor their progress for 4 years.
