Hello, November!
My name is Julie Minnis, Head Counselor at Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School. Thank you for taking the time to read this year's first edition of the HGMS Counseling Department "Counseling Connection." It will be filled with lots of student photos, information, articles, and resources to help your child navigate middle school, deal with big emotions, and have a successful year!
Middle school can be a very fun & exciting time, but it can also a be really hard and emotional time for students and parents! Trust me, as a middle school parent myself, I feel this, too! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Please note, we are doing our best! We lost a counselor allocation this year due to the lack of state funding. Therefore, we have 3.5 counselors this school year for our almost 1400 students! We are happy to help in any way that we can! Looking forward to a great year!
Kind Regards,
HGMS Counseling

Our Mission Statement
So What Do School Counselors Do?
1. Responsive Services- We provide individual, small group, and crisis counseling based on the needs of our students. **This is how we spend most of our time!
2. Guidance Curriculum- We provide a variety of skill-based lessons to all students throughout the year. **We will go into your child's classroom and teach the 4 skill goals: Intrapersonal Relationships, Interpersonal Relationships, Post-Secondary Planning & Career Readiness, & Personal Health & Safety. Each grade level will have about 7 counselor lessons each year.
3. Individual Planning- We meet with students to discuss academic needs, goal-setting, and planning for the future. **We will guide students to set goals, manage grades, and select classes for next year.
4. System Support- We manage a variety of programs to support our students and coordinate many activities that directly and indirectly benefit students. Some examples include: Fanny Pack Friday Coping Skills Program, Student Ambassador Program, HGMS Kindness Club, HGMS Crochet Club, Red Ribbon Week, Random Acts of Kindness Week, and more!

H-E-B Award Funds Counseling Office Makeover
I am really excited to tell you about how we spent the H-E-B Award funds transforming the HGMS Counseling Office into an interactive and safe place for our deserving students. The goal was to create a space that kids felt was welcoming, calming, modern, and a safe place that they could go to when they needed help. I envisioned it almost as if they were at a retreat. First, this meant that we needed to update the area to have cool, relaxing, and calming colors. We added a modern, new, black couch, grey trendy fabric chairs, shelves, a "calming" table with games/ activities, and a huge "egg" chair where kids could lounge or almost curl up. We also added soft pillows and blankets for students to feel invited to sit in that space because it just looks so comfortable. We utilized a variety of patterns and colors of contact paper to cover outdated furniture. We added framed awards, bulletin boards, different motivational signs to encourage and inspire our students. We even added Grounding Techniques to signage to help students self-regulate when having a panic attack. The coping skills bulletin board acts as a place where kids can grab take-aways such as how to cope with anxiety, losing a loved one, or breathing exercises. My hope was to help a student change their mindset when faced with an obstacle and give them coping skills to work through difficult times. The addition of the calming space and interactive bins are my favorite things about our updated counseling office! Many kids have trouble managing their emotions and have never learned positive coping skills to help with life's ups and downs. Therefore, I feel strongly that it is our job as counselors to introduce new techniques that could last a lifetime! In order to do this, we created a calming space to give our students an area to be who they are in that moment. We added a bright white table, a fun, clear bucket chair, and a variety of activity bins filled with fun things such as bracelet making, crocheting, drawing tools, coloring mandalas, games, diamond art, sticker mosaics, and kinetic sand to name a few! All of these interactive things represent positive coping skills that kids can now utilize in our counseling office to cool down or relax while they wait to speak to a counselor, or if they just want to stop by. Our goal was to transform the actual space to welcome our students, while giving them tips and tools in a fun and organized manner. We wanted our students to know that if they are dysregulated, they can come into the counseling office and choose an activity that will assist them in coping. I think that we did a good job in creating a calming space that invites kids to be who they are in that moment and I am proud of that. I felt that this was an important initiative to invest money on because I always want our students to feel welcome and comfortable in the HGMS Counseling Office. If we can't create that environment for our students, they will not come in for help. That would result in many lost opportunities to help a child process through really hard things.

Red Ribbon Week 2024
The National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, was established as a grassroots, nonprofit organization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention. Since its founding thirty years ago, NFP has devoted its efforts to the well-being of youth. Today, NFP is a national leader in drug prevention education & advocacy. Our mission is to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.

HGMS Kindness Club Spreads Kindness!
The HGMS Kindness Club is one of our most attended clubs on campus! I may be biased, but the Kindness CLub seriously has the BEST kids! Their kindness, leadership, care, and inspiring ideas fill my cup as an educatoir! It amazes me daily and I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to work with them! Anyone can joint the HGMS Kindness Club- all the kids have to do is show up! The purpose of the club is to spread kindness around our campus and the community! We do a variety of activities, service projects, lessons, and field trips that help to make our students active members of our society.
Parents, if you are ever interested in helping, please let us know! We are always happy to have you join us! So far this year , we have been focusing on the meaning of Kindness, Friendship, Empathy, & Finding Your Purpose. We will visit Haven for Hope on Friday, November 8th and we can't wait!
