Friends

Has anyone else but me been wondering why we've seen so many 'Friends' shirts around lately? Part of it's likely because they celebrated their 25th anniversary last year BUT I think the other part is their theme song is SUPER appropriate right now for where we are...When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month or even your year.

I try not to overly share information about myself in the Smore (hallways however..well...) however, I decided that in order for you to get my full message I have to share some of my nauseous November with you.

My Aunt

This past week my Aunt, who has lived in an assisted living center for some time, contracted COVID. She's was on a ventilator for a couple of days and things were touch and go. Last night, we learned her breathing is better (yay!), she's on a feeding tube but is still sometimes unresponsive. We're not sure what the next steps are, but not having someone there to see her, check in on her or even talk to her is hard. My dad at times can't even get someone to call him back because they are so busy. It's hard.

My Dad

Earlier this week he turned 70. We'd planned to go up to Oklahoma to see him and my mom and do a virtual birthday with some of his friends. However, he kindly asked us not to come...not just for his birthday but also for Thanksgiving...we're walking petri dishes...he wants to see 71. My sister and I will be doing Thanksgiving together with our little families for the first time without our parents. It's hard.

Isabelle

This is Isabelle, my 19 year old cat. I got her when I was 21 years old, without kids, starting my Master's Degree in Tennessee, a young, free spirit. She's moved from Tennessee, to Oregon, to Oklahoma, to Texas with me. She's seen me through 2 kids and a divorce. This week her back legs stopped moving properly. I took her to the vet on Monday and even with intervention didn't see progress Tuesday morning. I had the kids say goodbye to her Tuesday before they went to school. However, the vet had other ideas, he said 'oh no, you haven't given the meds enough time to work' and sent me on my way. Tuesday night she hopped up on my bed. I think she knew November wasn't my month..she's always been kind of intuitive. Today it's like nothing even happened. It's still hard.

and even though....

its hasn't been my month (or anyone's year), the one strong hold that's really kept me together is all of you. Coming to work, seeing your faces, talking with students, yes...even hiding feathers has kept me grounded.

I appreciate EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU. I appreciate your dedication to our students but I also appreciate your dedication to each other. You do an amazing job each day and I'm thankful to be here with all of you. I hope you all enjoy this next week and get some much needed rest.

I'm soooo thankful I have ya'll to keep me going!

Progress Reports

Progress reports will lock over the holiday break. Student grades must be updated before the gradebook locks. This means, entering grades for all students for every assignment you plan to count. If students are missing assignments you need to enter zero's so parents see there is work that needs to be completed. Otherwise, the missing assignment won't count in the grade average. At this point in the grading cycle you should have 6 to 7 grades for each subject.

Guided Reading:

For students who are struggling with foundational skills, decodable readers are an appropriate substitute for leveled readers during guided reading.

If you would like me to model a guided reading F2F lesson, let me know the time, and I'll be there.

For F2F/Virtual guided reading modeling, we should have videos of other teachers soon to share; Cara Warren can also model if you would like her to come. Cara also provided this resource for phonics readers to use: speldsa.org.au The phonics books include fluency word charts to overview prior to reading and one-pagers for quick phonics lessons.

Check out my ELST page under the "Balanced Literacy" button for Book Reviews students can use during independent reading; more will be added as I make them as well.

Curriculum Updates:

K-2--New Seesaw lessons have been added, and there is a tab for an HMH family letter that discusses what will be taught in each Module.

3rd: Multiple-choice revising and editing items will be included as field test items on grades 3–8 STAAR reading tests in Spring 2020 and 2021. These items will be embedded in the assessments and will have no accountability measure.

The new writing items will not become operational until the 2021–2022 school year. They look similar to the 4th grade multiple choice revising and editing passages--and there are Samples on the TEA website.
