CSD Rises to #1 in State in SAT Scores and #2 for Graduation Rate, Outpacing Metro and National Averages
CSD has announced that the Decatur High School graduating class of 2025 earned a mean SAT score of 1181, outpacing the metro and national averages and placing CSD first in the state for SAT scores.
According to GaDOE, this score represents a 12-point mean increase overall from CSD's previous year, including a 5-point rise in evidence-based reading and writing and a 7-point increase in math. In 2025, 73% of DHS seniors participated in the SAT.
CSD also shared that its four-year 2025 graduation rate increased to 96.04% for DHS, representing a .79% increase from 2024 and nearly a 2% increase over the previous three years. This improved graduation rate ranks CSD second among districts in the Metro RESA region, outpacing the 2025 state average graduation rate of 87.2% and ranking 40th among 180 public school districts statewide.
Eight DHS Seniors Named 2026 National Merit Semifinalists
Congratulations to the eight DHS seniors who were named as semifinalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship program, which recognizes students who earned some of the highest scores on the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists make up less than one percent of all high school seniors in the nation.
2026 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists:
L to R: Liora Yustein, Jack Shannin, Ellen Kolesnikova, Shoichiroh Furuta, and Isadora Rasnik-Stryker. Not pictured: Anushruti Ram, Zain Sidor, and Gerald Winkler.
National Merit Scholarship semifinalists will be notified in February if they are selected as finalists, and they may then proceed to compete for a National Merit Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded to finalists with high potential for success in rigorous college studies, as determined by their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership roles, honors, and awards.

Grades 3-12 Taking Interim Assessments October 13-17
During the week of October 13-17, students in grades 3-8 will take interim assessments in Math and ELA, and high school students will complete assessments in Algebra, Literature and Composition II, Biology, and U.S. History. These assessments, taken during regular class periods, are not graded and will not impact report cards. The purpose of these assessments is to give teachers valuable information about which standards students have already mastered and where additional support or enrichment may be needed.
Expanding Pathways to Student Success
CSD is going all in for student success and announcing enhanced course progressions and a slate of dynamic new courses, with expanded offerings in ELA, Social Studies, and Science. We’re creating more diverse and advanced opportunities so every student can discover their passions and forge a unique path to success.
Highlights:
- Reimagined science progression: Beginning next school year, 8th-grade students will take high school-level Physical Science to earn a high school credit.
- Expanded AP and elective options: AP Seminar, AP Research, and AP Literature & Composition can strengthen critical thinking and writing skills and open new pathways to advanced recognition programs, like the AP Capstone Diploma Program.
These expanded options allow students to design a personalized academic path and offer more paths toward an IB Diploma, an AP Capstone Diploma, or Dual Enrollment.

Join Us in Celebrating Literacy Month with CSD Reads Week
National Literacy Month promotes reading, writing, and lifelong learning. Learners of all ages are encouraged to read, visit libraries, and engage in language-rich activities to develop strong literacy skills.
From September 29 to October 8, CSD will celebrate CSD Reads Week and the beginning of Dyslexia Awareness Month by hosting various engaging literacy and awareness events. The week kicked off with a read-aloud by Superintendent Dr. Whitaker, followed by a Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) livestream featuring Georgia Reads Coach Malcolm Mitchell. Schools will participate in a "Buckets of Books" drive, collecting gently used books for Children Read Atlanta. Community involvement will be encouraged through guest reader opportunities, including parents, staff, and members of the Board of Education. Students will engage in the Rock for Dyslexia activity by painting awareness-themed rocks.
The week will conclude with another read-aloud by Dr. Whitaker and "Go Red for Dyslexia," where students and staff are encouraged to wear red to support dyslexia awareness. CSD families are also encouraged to attend the Decatur Book Festival, October 3-5, 2025. Let's read, CSD!
