Spring Forward
Dear CCPS Community:
As we close out another successful school year in Craig County Public Schools, I want to take a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished together. This year has been filled with academic growth, student achievement, and meaningful experiences both inside and outside the classroom. From strong performances in reading and math to outstanding accomplishments in athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities, our students have continued to represent our schools and community with pride. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our teachers, staff, families, and community partners who support our students every day.
Throughout the year, we have remained committed to providing high-quality instruction and a supportive learning environment for every student. Whether in our classrooms, on the field, or through community events, it has been inspiring to see the continued focus on growth, resilience, and excellence. Our small school setting continues to be one of our greatest strengths, allowing us to build strong relationships and ensure that every student is known, supported, and challenged to succeed.
As summer begins, I hope that all of our students, staff, and families take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with loved ones. Thank you for your continued support of Craig County Public Schools and for being such an important part of our school community. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the fall.
Have a wonderful and restful summer.
Sincerely,
Jason A. Wheeler, Ph.D.

Construction Updates
Boiler Project: This summer the school’s heating system will be upgraded from fuel oil to a more efficient propane-based system with new boilers, pumps, and supporting components. The project also includes installing four 1,000-gallon propane tanks, new piping, and necessary safety features such as concrete pads, bollards, and secure fencing.
Generator Project: Also, two emergency generators will be installed to support the entire campus, ensuring continuity of operations during power outages. The project includes reinforced concrete pads and transfer switches sized to handle both 240V and 480V services. Designated generator sites and temporary area closures are planned to support safe installation.

Instruction
Spring Into Learning: Spring has been full of excitement and learning in our classrooms! Along with preparing for upcoming SOL assessments, our 3rd grade students have been exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Civilizations through engaging lessons and activities. Students have worked while also finding creative and fun ways to make learning come alive.
Spring Adventures: Also brought exciting learning opportunities beyond the classroom through several memorable field trips. Our Pre-K students enjoyed a fun-filled visit to Amazement Square, 3rd grade explored the Safari Park, and 5th grade traveled to the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton to experience history firsthand. These hands-on adventures gave students the opportunity to learn, explore, and create lasting memories alongside their classmates.
School Events
Field Day: Field Day brought lots of excitement, laughter, and friendly competition to our students this spring. Students enjoyed a variety of activities including tug-of-war, spoon races, sack races, three-legged races, and many other fun games throughout the day. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to build teamwork, sportsmanship, and lasting memories as we celebrated the end of the school year together.

Instruction
Highlights: Students continued to engage in rigorous and meaningful instruction throughout the quarter across all subject areas. From hands-on learning experiences and career preparation opportunities to strong classroom discussions and academic growth, our students and staff remained focused on excellence. We appreciate the dedication of our teachers and the hard work our students continue to demonstrate each day.
The Arts
Showstopping Performance: CCHS students recently delivered an outstanding performance of the musical Beetlejuice, showcasing the incredible talent, creativity, and dedication of our students and staff. From the impressive set design and costumes to the energetic performances on stage, the production was a tremendous success and provided an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance. Congratulations to the cast, crew, directors, and volunteers whose hard work and commitment brought this production to life so successfully.
Athletics
Softball: Despite facing a number of challenges this season, our girls continued to grow, improve, and compete hard every step of the way. We will greatly miss our six graduating seniors and the leadership they brought to the program. At the same time, our younger players gained valuable experience through their hard work and dedication, and we are excited about the future of the team moving forward.
Track: Although weather has impacted several meets this season, our track athletes have continued to make the most of every opportunity to compete. Multiple student-athletes have already automatically qualified for the state championships in June, several school records have been broken, and others are within reach. The team also brought home a strong showing at districts with multiple silver medal finishes, while the 4x100m relay team captured a district championship. We are especially excited about the continued growth of the program, highlighted by the largest boys track team in recent memory.
School Events
BETA Club Egg Hunt: The event a core Kindergarten memory for many CCPS students. Every year, our Kindergarten parents very kindly donate the eggs and candy, and then Beta members work diligently throughout the week to put the eggs together and make a game plan of activities for our younger students to enjoy.
This year, we had a total of 800 eggs in our hunt! Our "littles" were grouped with a big kid, and then they were off to collect their eggs! We also had a special appearance by the Easter Bunny himself, who led all kids, big and small, in fun games like Red Light/Green Light and Duck, Duck, Goose. Our littles were so good, the Easter Bunny (via Beta Club members) gave each of them a special egg with their name on it once they returned to class!
