Scrapping Club! Scrapping Club!

The MMS Scrapping Club was featured in a news article on Steinbachonline this week. Click here to view the article to read about how Mr. Head and an enthusiastic group of Grade 5 and 6 students are learning about recycling and keeping electronic waste out of the landfill.

The Scrapping Club is always looking for more material! If you have e-waste that that you would like to donate to the Scrapping Club instead of sending it to the landfill, contact us at the school by emailing mms@hsd.ca

Semester 2 Begins Monday Semester 2 Begins Monday

Semester 2 begins on Monday for our Tech Ed, Human Ecology, and Art students. After half a school year of learning, the Gr 7 and 8 Art students will switch from Visual Art to Digital Art (and vice versa), and they will make a similar switch to the opposite subject in Tech Ed/H.Ec.

Volunteers Wanted and Appreciated! Volunteers Wanted and Appreciated!

Parents and caregivers, if you have interest in helping out around the school, in your child's class, or in another classroom, we would love to have you! In addition to the appreciated help that school volunteers provide, research shows when students see their parents in the school building the students themselves feel a greater sense of belonging and connection to the school. It's also a great way for parents to stay connected to the life of the school!

There are a variety of services that parent volunteers can contribute to the school including but not limited to:

  • reading to students
  • listening to students read
  • working with small groups or individual students in areas of expertise
  • putting up bulletin boards of student work
  • supervising on learning trips
  • assisting with classroom prep or organization
  • lots of other opportunities

If you have interest in helping out,

  1. start by ensuring that your volunteer paperwork is up to date (more information on that is found lower in the newsletter). All adults who work with our students must have their volunteer paperwork completed and approved before volunteering in the school.
  2. contact your child's homeroom teacher (click here to see our staff page) to indicate your interest in supporting the teacher and students. If possible, also indicate what kind of tasks you would be able and willing to support, as well as your availability (every day? once a week? once a month?), and how much notice you would need. Different teachers and subject areas will have different needs.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. A.J. Neufeld (principal) or Mr. John Terrick (Vice Principal) at the school

We are excited to again celebrate February as I Love To Read Month! Throughout the month, our students will participate in a wide range of classroom based literacy activities intended to provide enjoyable opportunities to read, and reminders that reading is a life long learning AND recreational skill. Thank you to our ELA teachers for their collaborative work to plan these activities for our students!

We all know that regular recess breaks outside are beneficial for student growth and development, and our students go outside for 3 recess breaks each day. It is better for everyone when all students come dressed to be comfortably outside each day. This means making sure they bring:

  • a toque
  • a scarf or neck warmer
  • winter jacket
  • winter pants
  • winter boots

Families, please remind your child to come to school fully prepared for the winter weather every day.

Indoor Recess may be considered in certain circumstances. Please click here to review HSD's Cold and Hazardous Weather Guidelines.

Parent Volunteers

Thank you MMS & community volunteers!

School volunteers play a valuable role in the life of our school and we appreciate your gifts of time and energy very much. To ensure the safety of our students, all volunteers must have the following documents approved and on file before working with our students:

  • Criminal Record Check
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Pledge of Confidentiality
  • Respect in Sport (if coaching)

Please contact us at the school office for more information

The Canteen is Open! The Canteen is Open!

The canteen sells drinks and snacks each day of the week. Pizza from Santa Lucia will be sold on certain days again this year as well. A gluten free pizza option will be available for those who need it.

Leaving School Grounds at Lunch

Please be reminded of the following policies for our students at lunch time

  • students who go home for lunch each day are dismissed at 12:15. They are expected to remain home for the lunch break, and return for 1:10 pm to rejoin their classes.
  • please be reminded that afternoon classes start at 1:15 pm
  • students who wish to go to the CO-OP at lunch require a note or email from their parents that is given to the homeroom teacher in the morning. MMS requires new permission each time a student wishes to leave at lunch time. When they leave, they should sign out at the office, and sign in when they return.
  • parents please be reminded to send a note or email to your child's homeroom teacher to communicate whether your child will eat lunch at school or at home. This helps us account for our students in the event of a lunch time emergency.
