MS 50 Updates: Week of January 30, 2023
Message from Principal Honoroff
Dear Families,
The release of the video of the police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis Tennessee left me heartbroken and angry. I know that our young people will be coming to us this week with a range of emotions, including anger, hurt and pain. Please be assured that our staff will provide a safe space for students to express the many emotions they have to process. Everything we do at MS 50, across content areas and activities, is aimed at building leaders for peace and justice in the world. This goal seems ever more important at this moment. Please know that we stand with you to support your children with love during this difficult time.
Mr. Honoroff

Student Leadership
We are super proud of our student government who regularly use their voices and their advocacy to be leaders for peace and justice in the school and in their communities. Our student government activists have participated in Black Lives Matter and Climate Justice rallies, and have traveled to Albany to advocate for bills limiting standardized testing and banning the North Brooklyn Pipeline. Our PRIDE Alliance student group has also presented to our staff on gender pronouns and LGBTQIA+ advocacy.
Little Amal
Students from MS 50 joined El Puente's "Madre Tierra" to welcome Little Amal to Williamsburg. Little Amal is a giant puppet of a ten-year-old Syrian refugee girl created to “represent all children fleeing war, violence and persecution and each with their own story. Little Amal’s urgent message to the world is ‘Don’t forget about us’.” Our students shared their lived experiences around refugee rights and gave “benedictions” to welcome Little Amal to our community.
Next Debate Tournament February 11!
We are so excited for our next debate tournament at In-Tech Academy on February 11! Students will meet at MS 50 at 7:00AM to travel by bus to the Bronx for our second debate tournament of the year. Students will compete and return to MS 50 at about 5:00PM (the exact time will depend on traffic and when the tournament dismisses). Please be on the lookout for an Operoo permission slip coming soon!
Judges Needed!
We are thrilled to have a very large debate team and that means we need lots of judges! If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the sign up sheet at ms50.org/judge

Lawyer Needed!
As we continue to fundraise to support our MS 50 students and families, we are looking to incorporate as a 501(c)3 in order to solicit larger, tax-deductible donations. If you or someone you know has experience and can support us on the legal end, please email our Parent Coordinator, Edda Figueroa.
Advocacy for Additional Space
MS 50 is growing! We are adding more students every week and we need the space to give all our students the space to learn, grow, and thrive. If you are interested in participating in advocacy and organizing to gain access to additional classroom space, please complete the Google Form below.
