Creating A Public Art Installation with Room 217
Jayne King, Chicago Lives Artist-in-Residence artist, is creating a vessel to encapsulate Room 217's learning experience this year in a OOAK vessel dedicated to Waters Elementary! This vessel will be both honoring our experience and documenting the changes at Waters since Jayne's dad was a student here---in the 1950s! Her vessel will be on exhibit later this summer! Thank you Jayne:)!
We decided to make our own vessels to honor Waters and Our World...We will be creating our own cicada time capsules or vessels to document what we think Waters will be like in 17 years---in the summer of our next periodical cicada cycle!
Our predictions will be housed in a very large cicada public art installation in our Secret Garden...We are SO excited and plan to come back in 8th grade and see how our predictions are doing...What fun! Thank you Jayne and Chicago Lives for this community collaboration!
Thx Katie B for all of those plastic cold brew vessels...And Lukas J for all those plastic bottle caps...

This month in the art lab...
The Mighty Hexagon!
In celebration of all things gifted to us by Mother Nature...we are looking very closely at bees, hexagons and the ideas of creating our own space...and with ALT Maker Week upon us...thinking about being the architects (like our local honey bees and community Maker volunteers) of our future.
We are looking at the impact of green choices---bees' wax and soy wax as alternatives to parrafin---or kerosene-based wax. This is our final everyday example of making doable choices to change the world. We've also learned some amazing gratitude to our honey bee neighbors...and know why the hexagon is the perfect shape or vessel to store precious cargo...as we practice positive and negative space identification and open composition in our honeycomb patterns.
We've really looked at how we make, curate and design our own spaces in daily life and the importance of creating healthy boundaries in our all-grade read aloud A Little Space for Me (Olson). Students will be designing mini narrative safe-space hexagons to culminate this multi dry media pattern project.
The works are bee-autiful!!!
