As we continue through the spring semester, our team is also hard at work planning for the 2026–27 school year. With a growing district, thoughtful planning is essential to ensure our students, staff, and families continue to have a positive experience in Willis ISD. Over the past several months, we have been reviewing enrollment projections, transportation routes, campus capacity, school start times, and community feedback as we prepare for the year ahead.

Some of the adjustments you will see for 2026–27 are the result of that careful planning and feedback from over 2,500 respondents in the 2026–27 School Year Planning Survey we conducted in November. We know change can be challenging, but these updates to attendance zones and school start times are made with your students in mind to support learning, make daily routines smoother, and ensure our schools are ready to serve our growing community for years to come. We appreciate the feedback many of you have provided throughout this process and your continued partnership as we work to make Willis ISD the best place for our students to learn and grow.

I also want to take a moment to highlight a project that has quickly become one of my favorite ways to connect with our community. Drive Time with Dr. James continues to bring our community closer to the people and stories behind Willis ISD. In each episode, I sit down with district leaders to talk about leadership, community, and the work happening every day to support our students. What makes the podcast even more special is that it is produced by students from Willis High School, who are gaining real-world media and production experience while helping tell the story of our district.

If you have not had a chance to listen yet, I hope you will tune in to a recent episode. It is a great way to learn more about the people and work that make Willis ISD such a special place.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools. I hope you and your loved ones have a safe, fun, and rejuvenating Spring Break!

Please take a moment to review our new Elementary Attendance Zones!

To ensure our campuses remain balanced and positioned to support student success, attendance boundary adjustments are often necessary to accommodate enrollment increases and maintain appropriate capacity. In addition, boundary modifications are needed to thoughtfully populate new schools, including Ruth Castleschouldt Elementary, which is scheduled to open in August 2026.

Families impacted by these changes should have received an email on Thursday, March 5.

If you have any questions or believe you received a letter in error, please contact our office at 936-856-1200 or by email at jvaglienty@willisisd.org.

As we continue planning for the 2026–27 school year, the District has reviewed community feedback regarding school start times. Families shared a wide range of perspectives in the 2026-27 School Year Planning Survey distributed in November. Of the 2,330 responses, the combined neutral and supportive responses indicate that a majority of participants (64%) are either open to or supportive of adjusting school start times. While we recognize there is no solution that works perfectly for everyone, the District carefully considered survey input alongside operational factors such as transportation efficiency, traffic patterns, and campus schedules.

Based on this review, Willis ISD will implement updated start and end times beginning in the 2026–27 school year. This adjustment also addresses concerns about morning traffic congestion. Shifting transportation schedules allows the high school to clear buses before heavier elementary traffic begins, which improves overall traffic flow and helps ensure more buses arrive on time to elementary and middle schools in the morning.

Below are the updated campus start and end times for the 2026–27 school year.

A screech then a crash began an unexpected journey last Thursday. The crash scene featured a red pickup truck on its side and a silver sedan with its front smashed in. Dirt and debris covered the south lanes of Little Egypt Road. The accident was steps from where a group of young kids were playing football. As soon as the first screech was heard, heads turned from practice to the vehicles and the coaches ran to render aid.

One Wildkat was a part of that group of coaches running towards the crash: senior David Ramirez.

“My first thought was that it was a small rear-end crash, but once I saw all of my players’ reactions. I turned my head quickly and saw the truck spin over and fall on its side,” he said.

With his past health science experience and his current enrollment in the Pharmacy Tech program, Ramirez knows one second can make the difference between life and death, making him the perfect bystander for when disaster strikes.

“Being in the health science pathway kind of gave me a sense that I should go that way to make sure everyone is okay,” Ramirez said. “I also just wanted to be a role model for all the kids, as well as for all the other parents out there. You should always go help rather than do nothing.”

His teacher and the Wildkat community is not shocked by Ramirez’s actions.

“I cannot express how proud I am of David,” health science teacher Katrina King said. “His actions reflect the character, compassion and leadership we strive to instill in our students. He is currently enrolled in the pharmacy class this year, and this situation truly exemplifies the kind of healthcare-minded professionalism and selflessness we hope to see in our program.”

Our Reading Under the Lights event was a beautiful reminder of how special our Wildkat community truly is. From families reading side by side on the field to older students sharing stories with our youngest readers, the evening was filled with moments that celebrated the joy of learning and the power of connection.

Students explored new books, enjoyed Kona Ice, had their faces painted by our talented high school art students, and most importantly, spent time sharing the magic of reading together. We are deeply grateful to the staff members and student volunteers who helped create such a welcoming and joyful experience for our families.

And to the many families who came out to spend the evening with us, thank you. Seeing our community gathered under the stadium lights was truly something to behold.

Moments like these remind us that when our Wildkat family comes together, we create memories that last far beyond the final page!

Willis ISD proudly hosted its first-ever Middle School One-Act Play Contest last Friday, bringing together talented student performers from across the district for an evening filled with creativity, storytelling, and Fine Arts excellence.

Each campus delivered an impressive performance, showcasing the hard work, dedication, and passion our students have for theatre. From memorable characters to engaging stage moments, the contest highlighted the many ways our students express themselves through the performing arts.

Congratulations to Lynn Lucas Middle School, recipients of Best One-Act Play for their production of Oz! Their performance captured the audience’s attention and demonstrated the remarkable talent within our middle school theatre programs.

We are incredibly proud of all of our middle school theatre students and directors for the effort they poured into preparing for this event. Opportunities like this allow students to grow in confidence, creativity, and collaboration while sharing their talents with the community.

At the Board Meeting Wednesday night, Dr. Chastity Simon was announced as the first principal of Ruth Castleschouldt Elementary School. Dr. Simon brings more than 20 years of experience in Texas public education and a proven record of instructional leadership as she prepares to open the district’s newest elementary campus.

Dr. Simon currently serves as Associate Principal and Dean of Instruction at Brabham Middle School in Willis ISD, where she oversees curriculum and instruction, supports teacher development, and ensures high-quality Tier 1 classroom instruction. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence, including helping lead a campus from “Improvement Required” to “Met Standard.” She has also served in campus leadership roles in Klein ISD and Spring ISD at the elementary, intermediate, and high school levels.

Her expertise includes state assessment coordination, Title I compliance, special population advocacy, and campus systems development. Earlier in her career, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year and received the Governor’s Educators Excellence Grant.

Dr. Simon holds a Doctor of Education from Sam Houston State University, a Master of Education from Saint Thomas University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a minor in Spanish.

After being introduced, Dr. Simon stated, “First, I would like to give thanks to God, who is the head of my life. I extend my sincere appreciation to the Board of Trustees, Dr. James, the cabinet, and the hiring and interviewing committee for their trust and support. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my family, whose unwavering encouragement, patience, and belief in me have made this journey possible. Their support has been my foundation.”

She continued, “I am deeply honored to be named the Principal of Ruth Castleschouldt. As we open a brand-new elementary school together, I look forward to partnering with our families, students, and staff to establish a strong, purposeful school community where all students feel safe, valued, and supported, and where high-quality learning is at the heart of everything we do.”

As the founding principal, Dr. Simon will lead the work of establishing strong systems, a positive campus culture, and high academic expectations aligned with the mission, vision, and core values of Willis ISD. Her experience and student-centered leadership position Ruth Castleschouldt Elementary for a strong and successful opening.

Ruth Castleschouldt Elementary, located at 8150 MP Clark Road in Conroe, will open in August of 2026 and serve students in grades kindergarten through 5th.

After exploring figurative language concepts in class, students showcased their understanding by dressing as their favorite idioms, filling the hallways with laughter, excitement, and imagination.

The event provided a fun, hands-on opportunity for students to connect academic concepts with creativity, helping deepen their understanding while building confidence and engagement. Activities like the Idiom Parade demonstrate how meaningful learning experiences can extend beyond traditional lessons and create lasting memories.

Kindness in Action at Brabham Middle School

Kindness Week at Brabham Middle School began with a simple but powerful gesture: handwritten notes of appreciation. Students took time to recognize teachers, administrators, and counselors with heartfelt messages, creating meaningful moments of connection across campus.

Each note served as a reminder that encouragement and gratitude can make a lasting impact. By choosing to recognize the people who support them every day, students helped set the tone for a week centered on empathy, respect, and community.

Moments like these reflect the culture being built at Brabham; one where kindness is not just encouraged, but practiced.

The Crucible Comes to Life at Stubblefield

Students in Ms. Stelter’s English III class at Stubblefield Academy recently stepped into the world of The Crucible in a creative and interactive way. Working together, students searched for hidden clues and used their understanding of the text to solve challenges inspired by the story.

The activity transformed the classroom into a collaborative escape-style experience, encouraging students to think critically, connect details from the reading, and work as a team. By applying what they learned from the text, students were able to “escape hysteria” while deepening their understanding of the play.

Activities like this demonstrate how literature can move beyond the page, turning reading into an experience that engages curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork.

In the March issue, we focus on helping families support student well-being through healthy routines, safe conversations, and positive habits as we move into spring. March highlights the importance of sleep and overall wellness, reminding families that healthy sleep habits play a critical role in students’ emotional well-being, learning, and daily performance. Families will also find helpful tips for improving sleep routines and supporting children in getting the rest they need to thrive.

As the seasons change, we also explore the benefits of outdoor activity and movement for mental health. Time spent outside, exercise, and family activities in nature can help reduce stress, improve focus, and strengthen connections at home. This issue includes simple ideas for families to incorporate outdoor time and physical activity into their routines.

In April, the focus turns to Stress Awareness Month, providing families with practical strategies for managing stress and building resilience in children and teens. Families will also find resources that support safe technology use, including digital detox tips and guidance for creating healthy screen habits at home.

This edition also includes important safety and wellness resources, including information on substance use awareness and online risks, as well as links to trusted mental health supports such as teletherapy options, parenting courses, and recommended books and podcasts.

Together, these months focus on strengthening healthy habits, encouraging open communication, and equipping families with tools to support students’ mental, emotional, and physical well-being both at school and at home.

Flu Season Is Here - What Parents Should Know

The flu can spread quickly among children and often comes on suddenly with fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, or fatigue. Parents can help protect their families by encouraging good hygiene, keeping children home when sick, and knowing when to seek medical care.

Keep track of daily transportation updates with the My Ride K-12 app!

My Ride K-12 gives you instant access to your child’s bus route, pickup location, and schedule. It also enables the district to send real-time notifications about delays, changes, or other important updates. If your student rides the bus, this app is ESSENTIAL; it’s the primary way our transportation team communicates with families.

*Please note that this year, each student will be given a student ID to scan when boarding and exiting the bus.

To download the app: Visit the App Store or Google Play Store, type in "My Ride K-12" and select "Install/Download/Get," or click the links below.

In Willis ISD, safety is our number one priority, and we will not tolerate behavior that threatens the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Students and parents can utilize the district’s anonymous alerts system to report any suspicious or known activity. K-12 Anonymous Alert allows for anonymous reporting (or you can add your information, and we can reply). It also sends messages to school and district administrators 24 hours a day directly on our phones. The alert system can be accessed on the Willis ISD mobile app or on the website linked below!

Education is a team effort. When students, parents, teachers, and staff work together, we set the stage for a successful year.

Please take time to review the Student Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Dress Code with your student. These resources provide clear expectations, build consistency, and help ensure that every Wildkat can learn in a safe and positive environment.

As part of our efforts to be more environmentally friendly, embrace innovative technology, and maintain fiscal responsibility, we have transitioned from paper to electronic flyer delivery. Our district cooperates with approved community partners by posting digital flyers online and distributing them electronically through our service provider, Peachjar.

Texas Education Code 37.222 requires all Texas public school districts to share with parents and guardians information and resources about the safe storage of firearms including information on section 46.13 of the Texas Penal Code. Willis ISD is sharing this information with you, courtesy of the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
