2026 ESP of the Year WINNER

Michael Smith Named 2026 ESP of the Year
Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), in partnership with the Education Foundation of WCPS, has named Michael Smith the 2026 Educational Support Personnel (ESP) of the Year. He serves Springfield Middle School as a Safety and Security Assistant and has served WCPS for three years.
The 7th Annual ESP of the Year Award event was held in the Manger Ballroom at The Maryland Theatre. During the program, Smith was honored for understanding how his work fits into the bigger picture of keeping schools safe. He pays close attention to details, noticing small changes in the building and in student behavior that help keep the school secure and supportive for everyone.
Known by Springfield students as "Mr. Mike," Smith builds positive relationships with students and extends his impact by helping lead an after-school club. He is trusted by staff and students alike and is recognized for his expertise and steady presence in all aspects of school safety.
WCPS Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Sovine, says, "“Mike exemplifies the very best of Washington County Public Schools. He understands that school safety is about more than procedures and processes. It’s about relationships, awareness, and a genuine commitment to students. Michael’s ability to build trust and support his school community in every setting makes an impact each day. We are proud to recognize him as our 2026 ESP of the Year.”
In recognition of being named the 2026 ESP of the Year, Smith receives a two-night stay at Elmwood Farms. WCPS also provided him with $1,500 to support his role within the school district.
