Week of October 27th - Oct 31st Week of October 27th - Oct 31st

Dear Westwood Families,

We’ve got a spooktacular week ahead! Next week is Red Ribbon Week, and we’ll be celebrating by learning how to make healthy, positive choices, all while having tons of fun! Each day will have a special theme, so get ready to show your school spirit in creative ways.

Then, to top it all off, we’ll finish the week with a fang-tastic Halloween Friday! 🎃👻 There will be costumes, classroom fun, and festive activities that are sure to bring lots of smiles. Class parties will start at 2:15 pm. This day counts as one of our 9 food days so students can enjoy a fun celebration with their class family. If you are planning to attend the class party, please make an effort to check-in in the office ahead of time. Bring your ID so our office ladies can print a visitor sticker.

Wishing you a week filled with curiosity, joy, and a sense of wonder!

Note from Mrs. Santillo

Hello families! October is typically the month we learn about safety. We talk about how in our building it is our job to keep students safe and their job to help keep it safe. This is one of our Conscious Discipline tools that we use in the building. We also talk about SEE/SAY and how to use our assertive voice if someone is saying/doing something we don't like. For example, if someone is calling you a bad name....we would practice saying, Stop! I don't like that...my name is __________. You may call me _________. We also discuss picking five trusted adults that you can go to if you are having a problem and might need help.

Wednesday, October 22nd we wear orange for Unity Day to show that at Westwood we take a stand against bullying and believe every student is part of our PACK. Being part of our PACK means we will always C-care for others and K-keep it safe!

A few students (3-5th) will be invited to participate in a partner program with the school and Arisa Health called Kids Helping Kids. These students will receive training to become mini "counselors" and be able to support students in the building on a basic peer to peer level. Of course, if the situation requires more the students trained will connect the student with me. If you would like more information please reach out and I'm happy to share.

PACK 2.0 is off to a great start! We are full at this time, however, we are keeping a waiting list in the event that students move, etc. So if you would like to be on the list please reach out and we can send home the information. Thank you to the 46 families that attended the Fall festival. Since the program is federally funded, attendance is very important. If your student is enrolled and you do not have an exception approved to miss days by me then please make sure your student stays--especially since we have limited spots and many children wanting to attend. If your student needs to go home for any reason prior to the end of the day you will need to let the office know so that we know who should stay or go home. Your student will be bringing home a paper with information about IXL-the academic program we are using for learning. It will show you how they can login from home to continue their learning outside of school. As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me anytime-vsantillo@sdale.org or 479-750-8871.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Santillo

Our School Day

Our office is open from 7:20 am to 4:00 pm. We open the doors to our building at 7:20 am and school starts right at 7:45 am. Dismissal is at 3:10 pm every day except Wednesday when we have early dismissal at 1:50 pm.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Car Riders:

  • If you have students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade, your students will need to be dropped off and picked up in the front of the building.

  • If you have students in grades 3rd-5th your students will need to be dropped off and picked up on the east side of the building.

  • If you have children in K-2 and 3-5, they will use the front car rider line.

  • For the safety of all students, please have their car tag hanging on the rear view mirror.

  • Teachers and support staff will be available to help students find their way to their classroom the first few days of school.

Walkers, walkers, walkers… and bike riders~

  • We are going back to the way things used to be for walkers and bike riders only. Please read carefully.

    • Students who are walkers or bike riders will be dismissed on the far side of the fence on McRay Ave.

    • We ask that parents do not congregate inside the fence for our students' safety.

    • We will continue to have a cross guard at the corner of McRay Ave. and Carlton St.

    • We ask that students and their families refrain from crossing in front of the building on McRay Ave.

    • Please do not cross McRay in the middle of the street. Make sure to use the crosswalk.

Your safety is our number one priority. We will communicate with you as soon as these procedures change based on construction updates. Thank you for your patience as we navigate all the new information coming our way.

We appreciate your patience as we work through all of these items on the first days of school. Our students' safety is our number one priority. We cannot do it without your help!

Parent/Family Information & Resource Center

How do I receive information from Westwood?

TEXTS: Click here to fill out a very short form that will add you to our text list. We use text messages to send out these weekly parent updates and reminders. We know texts are a convenient way to communicate for many of you, so please add yourself to the list by filling out this form. Multiple members of the same family can use it and each receive texts. If your phone number changes, you'll need to complete the form for your new number.

PHONE CALLS: We also send out phone calls through an automated system; you will receive these calls if your phone number is correct in Registration Gateway. If your number changes, you can update the information in Registration Gateway, or call the office to update.

SOCIAL MEDIA/WEBSITE: The weekly parent update and other announcements/stories are also posted on our school's Facebook page and website. We are working on activating our school's Instagram account also- we'll let you know when that's up and running.

PAPER NOTES: We also send out paper notes at times; most of these will be sent in folders that come home every Tuesday. Every now and then, we need to send information on other days, so it's a great practice to check the backpacks each afternoon/evening.

We don't want you to miss any information, so we put things out in lots of ways!
