Reminder: Passport to Winter Fun Back Flap Due Tuesday March 31st Reminder: Passport to Winter Fun Back Flap Due Tuesday March 31st

Principal's Message Principal's Message

In words of the great author CS Lewis, "Always winter never Christmas". Or at least it feels like "Always winter never spring! Will springtime ever arrive here in our corner of the world? My niece gleefully told me all about the 87 degree weather she had the other day, as she ran around her backyard in West Virginia. I could only sigh as I gazed out the window at gray skies and snow. Hopefully, April Fool's Day doesn't bring us a surprise snowstorm on Wednesday.

This week I began planning the sixth grade end of the year events with students over lunch. The students are considering a wide variety of options for their class trip, more details to follow. If you are the parent or guardian of a sixth grader keep these dates in mind:

  • May 27 or 28th: Class Trip
  • June 1st Bridge Up Performance NES
  • June 3rd Spring Concert
  • June 4th & 5th Camp Farwell
  • June 8th-10th Knight School
  • June 8th Bridge Up Performance at Northern Stage
  • June 12th 6th Grade Graduation 10am
  • June 12th Last Day of School 12:15 dismissal

It's hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching! It will be sad to see our sixth grade students move on to Oxbow. But as one group exits another group enters! Kindergarten registration will be May 6th starting at 1pm. Call the office to sign up.

As many of you may know the OUUSD Board has approved an FY27 budget to bring to the community on April 28th for approval. Within that budget is full day PreK at Newbury Elementary School. NES is seeking to identify all 3 and 4 year olds within our community in anticipation of having Prekindergarten at our school. If you have a 3 or 4 year old or know of families within Newbury that have a 3 or 4 year old please reach out. We'd like to start compiling a list of potential students.

Our students have been putting a great effort forward as they participate in state wide testing. VTCAP Testing continues with our third and fourth grade students next week. If you have a third or fourth grade student encourage them to set a consistent bedtime routine and limit screen time before bed.

Think spring, sunshine and warm weather!

K-2- we participated in gymnastics activities such as different types of rolls, balancing poses, balance beam, tramp, and other stunts. We worked on volleying skills with balloons and beach balls. To celebrate the winter olympics we did some relays and games that they may see in the olympics. (skating, bobsled, etc). We are just finishing our jumping rope section where students see how many jumps they can do in a row, Ninja jump rope, and kangaroo club. We are currently working in what is flexability and muscular endurance with the testing of each with curl-ups and sit and reach. During play week students participated in minute to win it games and cup stacking.

Positivity Project: Humor Positivity Project: Humor

Dear Families,

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Humor. Humor means enjoying laughter and bringing smiles to others.

Humor helps us see the lighter side of things, making tough times easier and more fun. It doesn't mean you have to tell jokes, but people with humor often notice the funny moments in life and share them with others. Humor can lift people's spirits and help them through challenges. It’s important to help students understand how to use humor in a kind way, to lift others up, and never at someone else's expense.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humor at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
