Topics:

Following rules, “superstar” listening and speaking skills, Holidays: Thanksgiving

Activities:

Thanksgiving- Shared things we are Thankful for, talked about the history of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it, and made I am Thankful Thanksgiving Placemats.

Listening and Speaking: We continue to practice “Superstar” listening and speaking skills (eyes on speaker, ears listening, mouth closed, hands and feet to self, raise hand for turn to speak) This takes time, as we always have so many things to share, but students are working hard, and doing well! All students shared their Thanksgiving Homework with the class and practiced using a “just right sharing voice”, stayed on topic, and let their audience see their work while they shared.

Science Science

Topics:

Fall season/Leaves, Spider Parachute, Sink or Float

Activities:

Fall season/Leaves – We read lots of books about fall and the changes that we see. We watched the Mystery Science Video Why Do Leaves Change Color?, had discussions, and did 2 different leaf art projects.

Spider Parachutes – we finished our spider unit by making “spider parachutes”. We watched two videos: “Introduction to Air Resistance and Gravity” and “How Does a Parachute Work?”

Students dropped a spider to demonstrate how gravity works. Students dropped a balled-up coffee filter and a flat coffee filter to demonstrate gravity vs air resistance. Students built a spider parachute then dropped a plain spider and a parachute spider together to see which hit the ground first. They then had fun testing out different parachute designs to see what worked the best.

Sink or Float – Students made predictions about which of the given items would sink and which would float and then tested their predictions. Many were surprised to find out that pumpkins float and paperclips sink. Students were introduced to the vocabulary: sink, float, and density.
