Supplies
As we enter the new year, many students are losing their pencils, notebooks, and other supplies at record rates. Please check in with your student to see if they need to bring in new supplies!
Additionally, the Paramaribo classrooms always try to stock extra supplies, but we have officially run out of pencils. If you are able to donate any of the following:
- Pencils
- Erasers
- Paper Towels
- Clorox Wipes
- Tissues
- Printer Paper
- Lined Paper
Please feel free to do so - we are so incredibly grateful for your support!

Attendance and Absences
Families may submit student absence excused notes by:
- Submitting information electronically via AspenGO (preferred method)
- Submitting a hard copy excuse note to the Attendance Counselor
- Emailing DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
We can once again accept absences excuses via email, as this is the only way to electronically attach documents. Please note information received via email may be processed more slowly than excuses submitted via AspenGo.

Happy New Year! It’s been wonderful to spend the first full week of the year getting back into the swing of things. 😊
This week, we launch into Unit 3 which focuses on the novel, The Giver. In Chapter 1 we looked at how the community maintains order and control, and in Chapter 2 we looked at how the upcoming “Ceremony of Twelve” affects Jonas.
Next week we will read Chapters 3-5 and continue to focus on how the setting affects the characters and discuss the tone of the story. If you want to discuss the book with your scholar, here are a few questions you might discuss:
In what ways does the community exert control over their citizens?
How is Jonas’s community similar or dissimilar to our own community (D.C)?
What Assignment would you want in Jonas’s community? (essentially job/occupation)
In what ways is life more or less equitable in Jonas’s community as compared to our own?
Or you could have larger thematic conversations:
When should safety be valued over individual freedoms?
What is the value of individuality?
What is the value of conformity?
Vocabulary Quiz
Scholars will also take their first Vocabulary Quiz for the unit on Thursday. First period will take the quiz on Friday to accommodate schedule changes due to testing. I’ve pasted the vocabulary words and their definitions below:
Accustomed: used to, familiar with
Conceivable: can be imagined or believed
Defy: to openly resist or refuse to obey
Diminish: to make or become less in size or importance
Disquiet: a feeling of anxiety or worry; lack of peace
Exempt: free from having to follow a rule that others must (uses the root word e/ec/ex = without, from, out of)
Haste: too much speed; great hurry
Relish: great enjoyment
Solemn: not cheerful or smiling; very serious
Transmit: to send out; to pass to another person (uses the root word trans = across, over, through)
Independent Reading Projects
Lastly, the Independent Reading Projects are due next Friday, January 16th. I’ve posted the document containing the instructions for the assignment as an Announcement on Canvas (titled “Term 2 Independent Reading Project”).
Math with Mx. Gomez
It has been wonderful to be back after the break and see all of our students working so hard and so well! Their energy and effort have been amazing, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
Next week, all students will take their Middle of Year iReady (MOY) Diagnostic, which helps determine eligibility for our Summer Math Acceleration Camp (SMAC). Emails notifying families about SMAC eligibility will be sent the following week. If parents request their student’s data report, I will provide a PDF copy upon request.
6th Grade Accelerated Math
We will work on ratios using tables and graphing coordinates, building on last week’s focus on writing equations.
7th Grade Math
Students will continue their unit on integers, applying multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers to real-world scenarios.
Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.
Summer Math Acceleration Camp (SMAC) Information
🔎Please direct all questions to DealSummerMath@k12.dc.gov.
As you may know, Deal offers an in-person math acceleration program each year for students who are currently taking Math 6 or Math 7. Students who demonstrate mastery of standards on the Middle of Year (MOY) i-Ready and the End of Year i-Ready (EOY) i-Ready by earning the required score will be invited to participate in SMAC 2026.
We will also offer a summer online asynchronous opportunity for students who will not be available for SMAC. To be invited to participate in the online asynchronous acceleration program students must earn the required score on the MOY i-Ready assessment and share the reason why they are not available for SMAC.
SMAC Boost | June 22 - 25; 9:00 - 12:00 noon (must attend all dates)
SMAC Dates | June 29 - July 23; 9:00 - 12:00 noon (must attend all dates)

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Welcome back, scientists!
This week students collected evidence to determine what causes seasons on Earth. They worked on a Gizmo simulation to understand the relationship between direct and indirect sunlight and heat to cause seasons. Students used that information to complete an Exit Ticket on whether or not other planets would have seasons. Students also took their Advisory 2 Roots summative this week. If your student was absent, please have them schedule a time with me for a make-up, either after school or during academic advisory on Thursdays.
Next week, students will take their Unit 3 Space Systems and Cycles summative on Monday, January 12th. Students should be using the three Blookets that are posted on Canvas to help them study. They also have their Space Systems & Cycles study guide (paper copy also available on Canvas). If your students are struggling with understanding moon phases, have them access the Moon Phases sim in Amplify, which does a terrific job walking students through the different phases.
We will be jumping into our fourth unit, Earth’s Place in the Universe, on Thursday and Friday of next week.
Blookets!
To prepare students for their upcoming assessments, I have posted 3 different Blookets to help them out. Here are the links (both account only and non-account) for students to study over the break:

Notes from MLL Support
We welcomed the students back after the winter break. Students were ready to jump back into our station routine. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, students will be in either independent stations on HMH or a teacher-led station working on student workbooks. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students will be in either independent stations on iReady or a teacher-led station working on student workbooks. Also, a friendly reminder – ACCESS testing starts in about a month in February. Students are encouraged to practice with HMH at home to get ready for ACCESS to the best of their abilities.

Library Corner
Overdue Library Books: Last week, families should have received a notice of any library materials that students have checked out from the library this year and are now overdue by 30 days or more. Please return these materials to the Deal library as soon as possible in order to allow other students to borrow these items. I will be away for the week of 12/15-12/19. Please return items to the library in January if the door is locked. Please remind students not to leave library returns in the hallway outside of the library. All materials should be returned to the bin just inside of the library door. Items may also be returned to the main office if the library is locked. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break! See you in 2026!
Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
