The Urgency of Now for Our Children
LaTisha Vaughn of the E3 Foundation spoke to the Charleston Branch about the Freedom School that has been established at Jenkins Family Village in North Charleston. This summer, 30 middle school students are enrolled in the program to improve reading skills.
"The urgency of now is real," Ms. Vaughn said at the Branch meeting. "We cannot be silent" on the attacks on the freedom to read through book bans and the end of African American history for AP History students in South Carolina.
Branch President Dorothy Jenkins participated in the July 9 Family Resource Fair at Jenkins. The NAACP Charleston Branch "is grateful to have a chance to work with the Foundation as it moves through a powerful summer of learning, family engagement, and community building," she said in a statement. "It was a pleasure meeting the 30 different students and parents. The networking with the other 15 or so other organizations was even more informative." There were agencies that President Jenkins said she had not met previously. "Teamwork makes the dream work ever so effectively," she said. "Being a partner with your organization has proven to be very profitable. Thanks again for your support and know you can count on the NAACP Charleston Branch any time to support you."
The Teen Curfew Takes Effect
In the first week of the curfew banning youths under 17 from King Street and other areas, one teenager was charged on June 29, according to a July 1 account in the Post and Courier. The 16-year-old, who did not live in Charleston, was released to a guardian.
Under the ordinance, anyone 17 and under is prohibited from remaining in a public place, motor vehicle, or establishment in the Central Business District between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., unless accompanied by a parent or guardian or falling under a clearly defined exception outlined in the ordinance.
The 'Big Beautful Bill' and You
There's been much talk about the budget reconciliation bill that passed Congress last week, but what's in it and how does it affect ordinary citizens? This breakdown from USA Facts might help shed light on what it gives and what it takes away.
