FOOD SERVICE CHANGE

Greetings Cohasset Families,

We want to inform you of a change in our Food Service Director. Marilyn Haraden, our Food Service Director for the past twelve years, is leaving us later this month. We want to thank Marilyn for her wonderful work and dedication to providing a first-class food service program for our staff, students, and families. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

We are excited to announce that we have hired Vinicio Cordon as our next Director of Food Service. Vinicio, who is originally from and who studied in Guatemala, comes to us with over two decades of experience in the food service industry, including owning and running his own restaurant, Sabor, in Plymouth for many years. Please see the link for an excellent Phantom Gourmet video / story regarding Vinicio and Sabor.

Most recently, Vinicio has served as the Food Service Director for Westwood Public Schools for the past eight years. Vinicio will provide creativity, culinary excellence, collaboration, and a student first approach to his new position, and we are thrilled to have him on the team. Thank you to the screening team for all their good work throughout the hiring process.

We will be communicating opportunities to meet Vinicio and to provide important suggestions and data regarding our food service needs in the coming days.

Sincerely,

Patrick Sullivan, Ed.D.

Talking to Students About Traumatic Events

Dear Cohasset Families,

In recent days, coverage of acts of terrorism and violence, including the recent tragedies in Maine, abound in social media. We condemn all such violence, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to those directly impacted. These images are disturbing to all of us, but they may be particularly traumatizing to younger viewers; therefore, it is vital that we have open and honest conversations with our children about these challenging issues when appropriate to do so. The following resource, which was published recently by Common Sense Media, provides advice regarding age-appropriate responses to trauma.

In addition, the resource below from Riverside Trauma Center provides solid guidelines regarding how to talk with your children when they have witnessed or heard about traumatic events:

Talking with Students about Traumatic Events

Principal Mills' words to the CMS community sum up well a sensible approach to help our children navigate the violence permeating the media:

"Encourage your child to come to you with any concerns and ensure they understand the importance of seeking guidance when they encounter distressing content. By fostering open communication, we help our children navigate the digital world while preserving their emotional well-being. Together, we can equip them with the skills needed to discern and respond to such images responsibly" (Principal Mills).

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's guidance counselor or adjustment counselor if needed. Please take good care.

Sincerely,

Patrick E. Sullivan, Ed.D.

Other Major Focus Points

We will continue to engage our students with authentic audiences and to work in contexts that simulate real-world scenarios and conditions. Whether it is the Financial Literacy Fair at CHS, second graders investigating salt marsh minnows and intertidal life, Cohasset High School students presenting their civics action plan and analysis of local watershed data to determine water quality and the health of Cohasset Harbor, CMS French students using their language skills in real life by ordering treats in French at our local Cohasset bakery, French Memories, the amazing opportunities throughout the district provided through our partnership with Holly Hill Farm, our diversity fairs and mosaic initiatives, our collaboration with CEF, including Deer Hill physical education (PE) students learning about bike safety and maintenance in PE, our music students meeting with professional musicians, or our civics and sustainability seminar opportunities (just to name a few), We will continue to provide our students with inspiring and engaging experiences. This real-life and authentic teaching focus will be a major focus for us this upcoming year and will undoubtedly be a major component of our next strategic plan.

On Friday, October 27th, METCO Directors, superintendents, and other district leaders from our 33 partner districts gathered to discuss the future of METCO in what has been titled, METCO 2.0. Led by Dr. Darnisa Amante-Jackson, founder and CEO of two companies – The Disruptive Equity Education Project (DEEP) and DEEP Corporate Consulting Partners (DCCP) and Dr. Lee Teitel, founder the Reimagining Integration: Diverse and Equitable Schools (RIDES) Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, participants engaged in a series of activities and discussions outlining why the work of equity, inclusion and belonging is so vitally important to the success of not just BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) students, but ALL students.

As outlined in discussions, one of the biggest obstacles that we must overcome is a mindset shift around the role and purpose of the METCO Program. The program doesn't just benefit the students who are bussed into the various districts, but also for those who live in these districts. The vision that we must continue to work toward is, "Every student in a METCO district will experience an inclusive, equitable, and antiracist education."

At the end of the day, participants were able to take pictures with all six of the New England Patriots Super Bowl rings as well as a group picture on the stadium field.

There is much work to be done but as the late Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court,Thurgood Marshall once said, "Unless our children begin to learn together, then there is little hope that our people will ever learn to live together.” The work is too important to dismiss, and we all must join together.

More to come.…
