Safe2Say Safe2Say

Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With Safe2Say Something, it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.

Here’s how it works:

  • Submit an anonymous tip report through the Safe2SaySomething system
  • Crisis center reviews, assesses and processes all submissions
  • Crisis center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
  • If needed, crisis center may contact tipster anonymously through the app

STUDENT DRESS

It is the expectation of the Bermudian Springs School District that each student and their parent/guardian hold the primary responsibility for determining the student’s personal attire, hairstyle, jewelry, and personal items (e.g. backpacks, book bags). Schools are responsible for ensuring that student attire, hairstyle, jewelry, and personal items do not interfere with the health or safety of any student and do not contribute to a hostile or intimidating environment for any student.

Core Values

Students have the right to be treated equitably. Dress code enforcement will not create disparities, reinforce or increase marginalization of any group, nor will it be more strictly enforced against students because of race, racial identity, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, gender nonconformity, sexual orientation, cultural or religious identity, household income, body size/type, or body maturity;

Students should be able to dress and style their hair for school in a manner that expresses their individuality without fear of unnecessary discipline or body shaming;

Students and staff are responsible for managing their personal distractions; and

Students should not face unnecessary barriers to school attendance.

Universal Dress Code

Students must wear:

Top (shirt, blouse, sweater, sweatshirt, tank, etc.) extending to the waistline on all sides (any top that doesn’t, must be covered by a top that does extend to the waistline on all sides);

Bottom (pants, shorts, skirt, dress, etc.); and footwear.

Students may not wear clothing, jewelry, or personal items that:

  • Are pornographic, contain threats, or that promote illegal or violent conduct such as the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia.

  • Demonstrate hate group association/affiliation and/or use hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or other protected groups;

  • Demonstrate gang association/affiliation;

  • Cover the head (hats or hoodies, except on pre-approved days).

The district may require additional student attire protocol requirements when necessary to ensure safety in certain academic settings (e.g. physical activity, science, or Career and Technical Education courses).

Attire worn in observance of a student’s religion are not subject to this Student Dress Code. Students may wear any religiously, ethnically, or culturally specific head coverings or hairstyles, such as hijabs, yarmulkes, headwraps, braids, dreadlocks, and cornrows.

ON-LINE GRADING- SAPPHIRE COMMUNITY WEB PORTAL

Parents have the ability to view student grades, missed assignments, homework, attendance, and lunch data via the Sapphire Community Web Portal. The most critical component to realizing this opportunity is completing your online Community Web Portal application. If you have not enrolled, go to the Parents tab on the Bermudian Springs School District website and select Sapphire Community Web Portal and select Create A Web Portal Account. Once you fill out the online application with the most up to date information and select your Sapphire Username and Password, the district will then verify your account. Once we verify your contact and children information you will receive an email with your Sapphire Pin. Once you receive the pin you will be able to log in and view all of your child's or children's personalized data. If at any point in this process you have any questions or concerns please contact sapphiresupport@bermudian.org for Sapphire Help.

BERMUDIAN SPRINGS WEB SITE

The information included in this newsletter, as well as information for the elementary school, middle school, and administrative office, is available at our district website. High School Newsletters are not mailed to your household throughout the school year. If you do not have access to the internet, you can have your child pick up a newsletter in the office. The link to the monthly newsletter will be emailed via the Sapphire communication system.

CLASS RINGS

During the month of September, sophomores will be receiving information from the Herff Jones representative about class rings.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students are required to change for physical education class. Please make sure your students bring sneakers and an extra set of clothes to change into on their physical education days.

BEHIND THE WHEEL TRAINING

Mr. George Shue will again be offering Behind-the-Wheel Driving to any student that has a permit. To register for this service, applications are available in the high school office. A $325.00 fee is payable on or before the day of the student’s first scheduled time of driving. Check or money order should be made payable to George Shue. In addition, Mr. Shue is also able to give your child his/her drivers’ exam when they are eligible. To be eligible, a student must complete the Behind-the-Wheel Driving and an approved on-line driver training course (cost of the course is the student’s expense and is completed on their own time). A list of approved on-line training courses is available in the high school office.

Parents should contact their auto insurance company to see what they require in order to receive student driver discounts. Some companies only require the on-line driver training course and some require both the on-line and the behind-the-wheel training in order to receive the discount. If you have questions about any of these changes contact the high school office.

NURSE'S OFFICE NURSE'S OFFICE

PARENTS REMINDER ABOUT STUDENT'S MEDICATION

A reminder to parents regarding medication during school hours. All medications are required to have a medication order form completed by your child's prescribing physician. Once that is done a parent/guardian must drop off the medication in the original container directly to the school nurse. Medications can not be sent in with students. Please contact the nurse directly with any questions or help finding the correct form to use.

ASTHMA INHALERS

The Board permits students to possess asthma inhalers and to self-administer the prescribed medication used to treat asthma when such is parent-authorized. Your child's physician will need to complete the proper paperwork along with a parent/guardian signature before a student can carry his/her own inhaler. Please contact the high school nurse at extension 2740 for additional information.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE CARDS

Please be sure to complete the most recent emergency card handed out and turn in the completed card as soon as possible to the school nurse. This information is vital in the case of an emergency or if an accident occurs. Please indicate on this card your mailing address and the phone numbers of those persons to contact in case of an emergency.

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT

BUS ROUTES CHANGES

The District will allow for a total of 3 bus stop changes per year. This constitutes a bus change. The bus change request must allow 24 hours for approval to allow notification to bus drivers. Students will not be dropped off or picked up at a stop that does not already exist.

A request for riding a bus other than your child’s assigned bus must be in writing from both parents stating both students' names, the bus number to be riding, and the stop they are riding to for that day, plus the purpose of this request and that you are permitting for this to occur. This request must be approved before 2:00 PM that day by the building office Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Cook. Please have your student submit your signed handwritten bus change request to Mrs. Cook in the high office or the parent may send an email to tcook@bermudian.org.

Bus policies will be strictly adhered to. Please view the Student Transportation Procedures on the website at www.bermudian.org under Services.

GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Any change of address and/or new telephone number must be updated in the Sapphire Community Web Portal. If at any time you have questions or concerns about the Community Web Portal Update process please contact

Sapphiresupport@bermudian.org.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

When your child is absent for two days or more, you are encouraged to call the guidance office to request assignments. It is important to call before 9:00 a.m. so that assignments may be collected throughout the day. Assignments may then be picked up after 2:00 p.m. in the guidance office or in the high school office between 3:00 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Homework assignments can be sent home with another high school student but cannot be sent home with a student that is in the middle school or elementary school. It is also a good idea to have your child know the name and phone number of someone in their class to get notes and/or homework assignments.
