Panther Update
Panther Families
Congratulations on finishing the first semester of this school year. I know students have been working hard. It is often a relief that there is a sense of new beginnings with the fresh start to the new semester. Winter sports are finishing their seasons and are entering the postseason in the next couple of weeks. Clubs and activities continue their meetings, community service, and their competitions.
Please work with your students to help them avoid the second semester slump. It is normal human nature to relax after working so hard to finish the prior semester. For some students, this period results in them starting out second semester by falling behind from the beginning. Please help your students to stay on a schedule, check Skyward and Google Classrooms regularly, and do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers as much as is needed.
I was able to talk with a remarkable group of students in Mrs. Zumhof’s Principles of Leadership classes last week. The students in those classes are learning the fundamentals of what it means to be a leader and the soft skills needed to act it out. These young women and men impressed me so much. I had a couple of messages for them that I hope made an impact. In particular, I wanted for them to know the POWER of a student. Often the smallest of actions have the largest impacts. It doesn’t cost anything but a moment of time to check in on someone else or to give someone an unsolicited compliment. We may never know the impact that one small act of kindness can have on others. It’s often the times when we feel like showing kindness the least that we need to show it the most. It’s often when we don’t have time that we notice someone else’s need. Students can have the greatest impact with a simple smile or a quick thank you. Can you imagine what our school culture would be like if all 1700 of us took the time to check-in on each other on a regular basis? We don’t need to know someone to care about them as a human being. Our students have great POWER.

BLHS Vocal Solo/Ensemble Results
Bonney Lake HS sent 48 singers to the Valley Region Solo/Ensemble Contest on Sat. Jan. 28th at Emerald Ridge High School. The singers prepared and performed solos and ensembles for judges and received a score based on specific criteria. To qualify for state, the singers must receive a superior and be the top score in their vocal category. We are honored to be sending 3 qualifiers to state at the end of April at CWU in Ellensburg!! We had several alternates as well and if the state calls them up, they will need to be prepared to compete!! I'm very proud :)

Safety
Parking Lot
Be prepared for long lines for pick-up and drop off. Traffic can be tough so please plan ahead in your transportation plans.
Please avoid parking in parking stalls when dropping your student off in the morning. Often the parking stalls are assigned to students. When someone is in their parking space they often get confused and park in another student’s space. It quickly becomes an issue. Thank you for understanding.
It’s Getting Dark
As the days go by, the sun is rising later and setting earlier. This means students are walking to school when there is less visibility.
Please drive carefully, keep your eyes out for students walking to school, remind your students to use crosswalks and to be vigilant.
Thank you all for helping to keep our Panthers safe.

If you and your family are up for it, let’s try to fill the stands with staff members this year.
Attendance
Student attendance is a major factor in student learning and success in school.
Students who miss 10% (or more) of school are at high risk of failing courses and research shows they have a significantly decreased chance of graduating.
Please help your students by getting them to school every day!
If your student is going to miss school please contact our attendance office at 253-891-5860 within 48 hours of the absence. Late Arrivals must be cleared the same day.
Attending a medical appointment (Dr., Dentist, Orthodontist, Ect.) during school hours? Ask them to provide you with a note and your student can turn that in to clear their attendance and to check back in school

Lockdowns and Reasons for them.
Lockdowns involve the school doing exactly that, locking down or securing the building.
There are a number of reasons why our school might go into lockdown, only one of them is an active shooter situation.
In a real lockdown, our primary objective is safety. It may not be possible to coordinate getting students for pick-up due to the reason for the lock down.
The school and district will share information as soon as we are able to.The primary goal is to keep our students and staff members safe. I want each of you to know that the drill is coming and it is a good opportunity to talk with your students.
School / Parent Communication:
Roughly 95% of our communication home is electronic.
Please make sure your email address is correct in our system (Skyward) so you receive the communications we send out!
If you need to update your contact information, please contact the BLHS Main Office at 253-891-5700 to be connected to someone who can help you.
Letters we send out will also be available on the BLHS home page.
I plan to continue sending out regular “Panther Update” emails to families. These emails will contain upcoming events and important information.
I hope you have found this information helpful. More importantly, I hope the start to your student’s year goes well and that energy continues throughout the year.
