When Math is More Than Math
During last week’s learning walks, I had the opportunity to spend time in several classrooms observing Illustrative Math lessons in action. What stood out most wasn’t just the math content — it was the thinking, conversation, and collaboration happening around the math.
Across grade levels, students were actively explaining their reasoning, comparing different solution paths, asking each other clarifying questions, and productively disagreeing when their approaches didn’t match. In many rooms, the most important moments came not when a student got an answer, but when a group worked through confusion together and refined their thinking.
This is very intentional.
Our math instruction is designed not only to build strong computational and problem-solving skills, but also to develop the “soft skills” that students will rely on throughout their lives: teamwork, clear communication, listening to others’ ideas, defending their own reasoning, and adjusting their thinking when presented with new information. When students talk through a strategy with a partner or work through multiple approaches in a group, they are learning how to collaborate and think critically — skills that matter just as much as arriving at a correct solution.
You might hear your child say things like, “I got to add on to his thinking,” or “Someone solved it a different way,” or “We chose to agree on a strategy.” Those are signs of deep learning. They show that students are not just doing math — they are thinking mathematically and learning how to work and learn with others.
I’m grateful every time I get to step into our classrooms and see this kind of engagement firsthand. The level of student discourse, persistence, and mutual respect I observed is something our whole school community can be proud of.

Keeping Limekiln Safe at Drop-Off
Morning drop-off is a busy time, and we want to make sure every student gets to school safely. The Upper Dublin Police Department has contacted us and asked us to communicate to families that left turns out of the drop-off line create dangerous situations and can clog up Limekiln Pike, making the street less safe for students, parents, and neighbors. Officers may begin issuing citations to help ensure everyone follows this guidance.
We know mornings can be hectic, and we truly appreciate your patience and cooperation. By following this guidance, we’re all helping to keep our students safe and keeping traffic moving smoothly. Thank you for being part of this effort!
