From Principal George

Dear Olympia Families,

Welcome back, a lot has happened since our last newsletter so please take a moment to check the calendar below as well as celebrate with us some of our amazing student moments. 5th Grade Families please check below in our "Restorative Practices" section counselor Hadas has some important upcoming dates to be aware of. Officer Winter has moved on though promises to come back and visit for some volunteer time. I would like to introduce officer Haliburton and let him tell you a little bit about himself in his own words

I am a retired San Antonio Policer with 31 years of service on south patrol, traffic, and the violent crime task force. My last duties there was in the capacity of working in Homicide Division as an investigator. I was a 2 year Officer with the Seattle, Washington Police Department working patrol and undercover narcotics operations. I originally worked as a Houston Police Department officer in Houston, Texas working the Wards and warrant task force. I served 14 years in the US Army as a Ranger, Sniper, and Tank commander. My tours included the Cold war of Europe; ie. Germany and Desert Storm. I am a graduate of the University of Houston with a dual Major in Finance/Marketing. I did my Masters at Sam Houston State University in Criminal Justice Management.

I am retired now; but I came back into Law Enforcement after the saddening Uvalde incident to work with kids and do my part to keep them as safe as possible in their lives.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Olympia Cheer performs at the Spurs

Over the break Olympia Cheer had an opportunity to perform at a Spurs game. They put in a lot of extra practices and really put in a great presentation. Special thanks to the staff and parents that helped make this amazing opportunity a reality for these young leaders. If you would like to watch a video of their performance head over to our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/olympiaelementary/

Mrs. Norris PreK Class

During a walkthrough got to witness a special moment, every student in the class correctly reciting their ABCs which was exciting but not nearly as much as watching them cheer each other as they were completing it. Such a great group of students.

Outstanding Olympians

We celebrated several groups of Outstanding Olympians a couple right before the break and some last Friday. Selected for their commitment to following our core values of respect, responsibility, and restorative practices. Their individual pictures and awards will be on display all week in our main hallway, their achievements were announced to the entire school today, and they will go home with them next week. Counselor Corner

Hi 5th Grade Families!

I can't believe it's time to start talking about Middle School for our 5th Graders!

First, please see the flyer about 5th Grade Parent Night offered at our various middle schools. This is a great opportunity for you and your student to learn about different electives and courses offered at Judson middle schools.

It is also time for JSTEM Academy applications. Students interested in applying for the lottery have from now until February 6 at midnight to complete applications. The attached flyer has information about two Open Houses that will provide more information about JSTEM and the application process.

Learning in Classroom Circles

Nov 10th-Dec 1st Being Considerate

If you would like to reinforce the lessons on Being Considerate we recommend 4 popular kids books that could lead to great discussions. These could also probably be found on utube as well Miss Tizzy by Gray, Grumpy Cat by Teckentrup, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Spenelli, and Tacing Care of Momma Rabbit by Lobel. Some Sample Qs: When we do the right thing by taking care of others we are being considerate and showing compassion. What were some of the good things people did in the story. Why did they do those things?

The Goal: When we do the right thing, we can feel it in our hearts. When we take care of others...we have happy hearts. We can show compassion and consideration to our friends, family, pets, and even people we don't know. The more we practice the more we get into the habit of doing it everywhere.

Summary/Key Phrase: When we do the right thing, we have HAPPY HEARTS.

Dec 1st-Dec 15th Using Good Manners

If you would like to reinforce the lessons on Using Good Manners we recommend 4 popular kids books that could lead to great discussions. These could also probably be found on utube as well Please, mr. Panda by Anthony, Just Say Please by Mayer, What Pets Teach us by Donner, and Do unto Otters by Keller. Some Sample Qs: There are certain words that show others they have good manners what are some of those? There are certain actions we can take that show good manners as well what are those?

The Goal: The best way for students to get into a good habit of using manners is through practice. Teachers will continue to practice and reinforce good manners throughout the year support them through practice in the home as well.

Summary/Key Phrase: My behavior sends a message
