A Message from Your Principal Team
Dear Washington Families,
As we move deeper into the school year, we’re seeing more clouds than sunshine these days! With colder weather on the way, please remember that when roads are wet or icy, it can take a little longer to travel safely to and from school. In the event of a school closure or delayed start due to inclement weather, our District will notify families through multiple communication channels and media outlets (see more information below).
Safety Reminder: Please help us keep Arrival and Dismissal safe and efficient each day. If you’re dropping off or picking up your student(s), remember to prioritize safety first, follow all designated traffic patterns, and avoid blocking driveways or traffic flow.
Also, as temperatures drop, please make sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather — warm coats, hats, and rain gear help keep everyone comfortable and ready to learn.
If you ever have suggestions to improve safety, we welcome your feedback — just reach out to our office.
Go Eagles! 🦅
Warmly,
Alfredo Belanger, Principal
Antonio Ramos, Asst. Principal
What is happening at Washington?
Book Bucks Reading Program
Fostering a love of reading in children opens the door to a world of imagination, knowledge, and lifelong learning. At Washington, our amazing school Librarian, Mrs. Veliz, runs our Book Bucks program. After finishing a chapter or picture book, students fill out a Review and exchange it for $1 Book Buck. Once they have $5 Book Bucks you can spend it on prizes during Library Class or on Friday mornings when the Book Buck cart comes around!

Q1 Academic and Attendance Celebration
As we wrapped up the first quarter, Washington celebrated with an Attendance and Academic Recognition Assembly! We reviewed attendance reports and recognized all students who qualified as regular attenders under the State of Oregon’s standard — attending 91% or more of school days during the quarter.
To make it extra special, all regular attenders were entered into a random drawing, and two students from each grade level received prizes for their outstanding commitment to being present and engaged.
We also celebrated students who excelled on our Fall academic assessments in Reading, giving them well-deserved recognition in front of their peers.
A big thank you to our Washington Student Council for helping make the assembly a success.
Great work, Eagles — keep soaring!
YouthTruth Survey
As of 11/9 we have only heard from 7% of our families.
Families, I am writing to ask you for ~15 minutes of your time to complete an online survey that will help us improve your child’s school. We have asked YouthTruth – a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the country – to conduct an anonymous survey on our behalf.
Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on November 21st by clicking the link below! The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Russian.
Please note:
The survey takes about 15 minutes and needs to be completed in one sitting.
We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you may respond to the survey multiple times - one time per child at Washington.
If you write any comments, please do not include your name in your answers or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership.
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to us.
If you have any questions about the survey, or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please contact me at abelanger@woodburnsd.org, or call the school at (971)-983-3050. We look forward to hearing from you, and we will share the results with families as soon as we receive results!
Safety
Message from our Superintendent (repeat)
As a district, we will continue to fully support and uphold Oregon's "Sanctuary Laws," under which no public resources, including school employees, may be used to assist with federal immigration enforcement actions. Immigration officials will not be allowed access to any part of a school building beyond the school office, and, absent a judicial order, Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officials do not have the authority to remove a student from school. Our district does not collect information about immigration status, and if student records are requested, they will not be provided without a judicial subpoena. Student records are protected under federal and state law.
Family Resources - Here you’ll find family preparedness resources and videos as well as information about what our schools do and don’t do related to ICE and other resources. Each school has staff trained to support families with completing a family preparedness packet upon request. Please contact your school principal for support.
As with other potentially traumatic events, we have support available in every school for students who may be struggling. This includes:
School counselors, social workers, and school psychologists who can provide emotional support and coping strategies.
Home School Contacts and Family Engagement Specialist who can connect families with outside organizations and resources.
Safe and welcoming school environments where every student is treated with kindness, care and respect, regardless of background or circumstance ensuring that our schools remain places of learning, belonging, and hope.
If your child is experiencing fear, anxiety, or sadness, please reach out to your school principal or counselor. They can help connect you with the care and resources your family needs.
Thank you for your support in continuing to make our school a safe and supportive place for all students, especially in challenging times. We are strongly committed to keeping all of our students, staff, and families safe. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for standing together in compassion and unity.
